A trash hauler employee was hospitalized last week after being hit by a company truck while on the job in Huntington Woods, officials said.

The city’s Public Safety Deputy Director Bill Cudney told The Oakland Press that the driver was backing up on the roadway and struck the coworker who was behind the vehicle at the time.

Cudney said the worker was transported to an area hospital for treatment of injuries that were “significant” but not believed to be life-threatening. He also said from his understanding the driver wasn’t speeding, and the incident was unintentional and accidental. Criminal charges aren’t expected, Cudney said.

Neither the driver nor the injured man are Huntington Woods residents, he added.

Limited information on the incident, the victim and the driver is available because it’s not clear which law enforcement agency is handling the follow-up investigation. Cudney said it’s a Michigan State Police case, but MSP Public Information Officer Lt. Mike Shaw said it isn’t.

Cudney said MSP took the report and was brought into the case because it has crash investigation equipment that his department doesn’t have for cases such as this one. Shaw said MSP “only sent a crash investigator” and provided no other information.

Huntington Woods contracts with Troy-based Tringali Sanitation for garbage collection services. The Oakland Press reached out to Tringali on Monday; a company representative said “it’s ongoing” and there was “no one available to comment.”
