Downey will once again have a local YMCA facility in the community.

Various city officials and elected officials, Los Angeles County Supervisor Janice Hahn, and the board of the Kolar Family YMCA held a groundbreaking on Tuesday for a new state-of-the-art facility.

Plans for the renovation came four years after the existing 61-year-old building fell into disrepair with significant plumbing and electrical issues, a leaky roof, a broken pool, officials said. It closed during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The YMCA has been serving the Downey community since 1941, and on an annual basis served 15,000 members and 2,400 families in the city and surrounding areas.

The new Kolar Family Y will be a brand new facility built at the same location where the currently closed branch sits at 11521 Downey Ave. It will feature a new indoor pool, pickleball courts, a new gym facility, men’s and women’s locker rooms, and community space. It will also be ADA compliant to be more welcoming to the senior and disability communities, and accessible for all community partners and members.

This new facility was made possible in part by $2 million in funding promised to the Kolar Family YMCA from Hahn’s office. The supervisor presented the check to the board at Tuesday’s event.
