Arden Salles set up a pair of goals, and Soquel High’s girls soccer team beat San Lorenzo Valley 3-1 in Felton to open Santa Cruz Coast Athletic League play Tuesday.
The Knights (6-3-1, 1-0-0) outshot the Cougars (1-5-0, 0-1-0), 22 to 4.
“Good win to start league play; Soquel dominated the majority of the match,” Knights coach Jose Sierra said. “We missed many goal opportunities. … After the game, I told our team we need to continue to improve to be resilient and stay focused.”
Leah Tuttman finished off a pass from defender Milan Flores in the 15th minute for the Knights.
In the 35th minute, Salles beat three defenders during a run up the left side and crossed the ball to Isis Tumanson, who scored and gave the Knights a 2-0 lead at the half.
Jessica Stoelting scored on a pass form Betsy Edwards in the 55th minute to narrow the Cougars’ deficit.
Mireya Gomez headed in a corner kick from Arden in the 75th minute to cap scoring. It was the Knights’ eight corner of the game.
SLV goalie Cheyenne Casey made 10 saves.
Sierra praised his defense, which includes Chloe McGilvray, Haily Betterman, Ashlyn Brady and Milana Flores.
On Thursday at 7 p.m., Soquel plays at Santa Cruz (3-4-1, 1-0-0), while SLV plays at two-time defending league champion Aptos (6-2-0, 1-0-0).
Santa Cruz 2, at Harbor 1 >> Lia Gularte had a goal and an assist, and the Cardinals scored twice in the second half to rally for their SCCAL win Tuesday.
Ava Bibighaus scored for the Pirates (0-7-0, 0-1-0) in the first half.
Joy Roberts scored on a corner kick from Gularte, and Gularte finished off a pass from Lianna Cerdas.
“I felt like we had good possession most of the game, creating good scoring chances,” Cardinals coach Poul Schiebel said. “Even after falling behind in the first half, I felt we could still find a tie or possibly a win. I’m proud of how the girls kept their composure and came from behind to win. Hopefully, it’s a sign of good things to come.”
Goalie Ari Flores made eight saves for the Cardinals (3-4-1, 1-0-0), who host Soquel (6-3-1, 1-0-0) on Thursday at 7 p.m.
Harbor hosts Scotts Valley (3-3-3, 0-1-0) on Thursday at 7 p.m.
At Aptos 6, Scotts Valley 0 >> Isabella Hartnett scored three of her team’s five goals in the first half and the Mariners coasted to the win in their SCCAL opener Tuesday.
Emma Ingram and Alexa Castaneda followed up shots for goals. Anahi Macias scored late in the second half.
Gigi Zuniga assisted two goals, and Bella Doolittle set up a goal.
Junior goalie Jazzy Phillips made nine saves for the Falcons (3-3-3, 0-1-0), who play at Harbor on Thursday at 7 p.m.
Goalkeeper Evelyn Pini made four saves for the Mariners (6-2-0, 1-0-0), who host SLV (1-5-0, 0-1-0) on Thursday at 7 p.m.

At Pajaro Valley 4, Carmel 1 >> Valeria Acosta scored three goals, and the Grizzlies extended their win streak to 11 matches on Tuesday.
Leilani Vazquez had a goal and an assist for the Grizzlies (11-1-0, 4-0-0), who remain unbeaten in the Pacific Coast Athletic League’s Mission Division.
Scarlet Gomez and Jocelyn Orozco each had an assist. Goalie Kendra Rivas made three saves.
Samantha Enea scored for the Padres (2-5-3, 1-1-1).
Pajaro Valley faces Pacific Collegiate School (4-4-0, 2-1-0) at Soquel High on Thursday at 4 p.m.
At Monte Vista Christian 2, Alisal 1 >> Sophomores Riley Rutter and Tea Knowles scored in the final two minutes and the Mustangs rallied for their thrilling PCAL Mission Division win Tuesday.
Rutter scored on a corner kick from Ashley Drago in the 78th minute, and Knowles scored on a pass from Ashlyn Hoffman in the 79th minute.
“This victory is a testament to the power of teamwork, resilience, and perseverance,” coach JuanDiego Alvarez said. “The girls have been training incredibly hard, and tonight they poured their hearts and souls onto the field. They absolutely earned this win.”
Freshman goalie Charlotte Groves made five huge saves for the Mustangs.

At North Monterey County 3, PCS 0 >> Goalie Hailey Woelfel made seven saves in the Pumas’ PCAL Mission Division loss Tuesday.

D’Rell Hopkins scored 12 points for the Knights (8-7, 1-0), who led 36-21 at the half.
Noah Steiger scored 16 points for the Cougars (4-9, 0-1), and Wyatt Himmelstrup scored 15 points.

At Aptos 69, Scotts Valley 47 >> Senior guard/forward Isaiah Ackerman was acknowledged before the game for reaching the 1,000-point milestone last week, and he responded by scoring a game-high 25 points in the Mariners’ SCCAL opener Tuesday.
Senior guard Nick Tovani scored 14 points for the Mariners (11-4, 1-0), who led 32-12 at the half. Senior center Owen Warmerdam scored 12 points. Demian Matlow made three 3s and finished with nine points.
The Falcons made five free throws before producing their first field goal of the first half three minutes into the second quarter.
Alex Burgos scored 15 points for the Falcons (6-9, 0-1). Senior guard Taylor Knox scored 11 point and class made Zach Shilling, also a guard, scored 10 points.

Santa Cruz 78, at Harbor 28 >> Junior forward DeMarco Hunter had 22 points and 12 rebounds to pace the Cardinals in their SCCAL opener.
Senior forward Guerande Houssin, a transfer from Harbor, scored 13 points for the Cardinals (6-7, 1-0). He also had five of his team’s 16 steals. Sophomore guard L.J. Legan scored 12 points, and Kaden Miritz pulled down 13 rebounds.
Freshman guard Hudson Bare made two 3-pointers and scored 12 points to lead the Pirates (5-9, 0-1). Sophomore guard Malik Wooden chipped in with five points.
On Friday at 7 p.m., Santa Cruz plays at Soquel (8-7, 1-0), while Harbor plays at Scotts Valley.
St. Francis 60, at Gonzales 50 >> Nash Horton recorded a double-double and the Sharks won their PCAL Cypress Division game Tuesday.
The Sharks led 29-24 at the half, but entered the fourth down 39-37.
Isaiah Villalobos scored a team-high 18 points and had four assists, three steals, and two rebounds for the Sharks (13-3, 4-0). Horton had 13 points, 12 rebounds, four assists, and four steals. Robert Gomez made three 3s, scored 17 points, and had four rebounds. Mason Borrego had two points, 11 rebounds, and two assists.
St. Francis hosts Greenfield on Thursday at 7:30 p.m.
At Soledad 65, PCS 55, OT >> The Pumas had the ball with 7 seconds left in regulation but were unable to get a shot in their PCAL Cypress Division loss Tuesday.
Pablo Morales hit two 3-pointers and the Aztecs outscored PCS 12-2 in the extra stanza.
Garrett Koontz scored 18 points in the first quarter for the Pumas and finished with 27. Ian Bulfin scored some key baskets for PCS in the fourth quarter and finished with 18 points.
Freshmen Bixby Rasmussen and Tommy Pan played well in the second half, coach Duane Garner said.
PCS (2-7, 0-3) hosts Gonzales (3-7, 1-2) on Thursday.
