A Posen man was taken into custody without incident early Tuesday afternoon following a three-hour standoff with police, officials said.

The man, whose name is being withheld until criminal charges are filed, was arrested outside his home in the 14600 block of Blaine Avenue at 12:16 p.m., police said.

He allegedly pulled a gun on a man waiting for a ride from his fiancee in the area of 147th Street and Cleveland Avenue just before 9 a.m. and then fled on foot to his home a couple blocks away when the man’s fiancee pulled up in her vehicle, Chief William Alexander said.

The suspect remained holed up in his residence with three other family members, including a 6-month-old child, for the next few hours as Posen police and officers from the South Suburban Emergency Response Team and the Sheriff’s Hostage Barricade Team mobilized outside, the chief said.

The alleged offender’s family members eventually exited the residence without him around 11:30 a.m., police said. None of them were harmed.

Less than an hour later, the suspect, who had been locked inside a bedroom, exited the home’s backdoor, lit a cigarette and sat down on the steps, Alexander said.

He did not respond to verbal commands from police, but once officers realized he did not appear to have anything in his hands, they approached and arrested him, the chief said.

The man was not armed when he was taken into custody, but police have obtained a search warrant for the home and plan to execute it shortly in an attempt to recover the handgun he reportedly brandished, Alexander said.

Police said the alleged offender does not have a Firearm Owners Identification Card or a Concealed Carry License.

It’s unclear what caused the initial altercation that led to the hourslong standoff.

Police said the alleged offender approached a man who was sitting on the ground waiting for a ride from his fiancee, they exchanged words, then the alleged offender swung at the man. When the other man got to his feet to defend himself, the alleged offender grabbed a gun from his waistband, but did not point it at the other man, police said.

When the man’s fiancee pulled up in her vehicle, the alleged offender took off on foot pursued by the alleged victim, according to police. The chase crossed 147th Street and ended a couple of blocks away when the alleged offender entered his home, police said.

Officers attempted to make contact with the alleged offender inside the home, but other than some rustling blinds did not get a response, Alexander said.

He said family members of the alleged offender were able to make contact with the three family members who were inside the home and helped coordinate their eventual evacuation.

Alexander said the department had dealt with the alleged offender in the past.

He was arrested in March and charged with criminal damage to property for allegedly doing damage to a Pace bus, police said. That adjudication of that case was not immediately known.
