Cops: Eighth-grader threatened classmates in social media video

An eighth-grade student at St. George School in Tinley Park has been removed from school after he posted a video to social media threatening violence to several of his fellow students, police said in a news release Thursday.
A parent of one of the threatened students saw the video Wednesday night and contacted police, who conducted a threat assessment that involved talking to the students involved and their parents, according to Tinley Park police.
As a result of the investigation, police contacted the principal, and the student was told that night not to return to school the next day. The student and his family complied.
Tinley Park police said an investigation is continuing, and the department will provide extra patrols in the area around the school at 6700 W. 176th St.
Deputy Police Chief Charles Faricelli said officers spoke Wednesday night with the boy who posted the video and his family, but that he was not familiar with the nature of the threats that were made or what motivated the student.
Whether to charge the student is “something we're looking at” but isn't the only option police are considering, he said.
The Chicago Archdiocese's office of Catholic schools, in a statement, said the video, posted on YouTube, was subsequently removed after the threat was discovered.
Parents at the school were notified about the incident, and St. George is “working closely with Tinley Park Police to take the necessary steps to ensure the safety of students, faculty and staff,” according to the statement.
The statement does not address whether further disciplinary action would be taken against the student or when he might return to school.
