Kwame Evans Jr. scored 21 points and Oregon’s 7-0 run in the last 59 seconds helped the visiting Ducks steal a 71-70 win over USC on Saturday.

Nate Bittle scored 14 points to go with 11 rebounds and four steals. His two foul shots with 10 seconds left were the go-ahead points for Oregon (10-17, 3-13 Big Ten).

Chad Baker-Mazara had 21 points before fouling out and Ezra Ausar scored 15 points to go with 11 rebounds before fouling out for the Trojans (18-9, 7-9 Big Ten).

With Baker-Mazara and Ausar on the bench, Alijah Arenas attempted to split defenders before Oregon’s Dezdrick Lindsay swiped the ball and threw it into the front court as time expired.

Jacob Cofie made 1 of 2 foul shots to give USC a 70-64 lead with 1:10 left. Evans responded with a layup and drew Ausar’s fifth foul to reduce Oregon’s deficit to four.

Evans missed the foul shot, and in a scramble for the ball, Oregon’s Carter threw it out to Evans who buried a 3 to make it 70-69. Arenas missed his shot attempt and Kam Woods missed the follow-up tip-in before Bittle collected the rebound.

Out of a timeout, Bittle caught a lob pass in the lane before getting fouled by Baker-Mazara and made the game’s final points.

No. 4 Arizona 73, No. 2 Houston 66: Anthony Dell’Orso tied a season high with 22 points and the visiting Wildcats toppled the Cougars to move into sole possession of first place in the Big 12 Conference.

Arizona (25-2, 12-2), which opened the season 23-0, won its second straight game following consecutive losses to then-No. 9 Kansas and then- 16th-ranked Texas Tech, that knocked the team out of the No. 1 spot in the AP Top 25 poll.

The Wildcats were down by two before scoring the next 12 points to make it 60-50 with about five minutes remaining. The Cougars missed eight consecutive shots and had three turnovers in that stretch

Houston (23-4, 11-3) hadn’t scored in about eight minutes when Emanuel Sharp made two free throws with 4 ½ minutes to go. Kalifa Sakho made two more free throws to cut the lead to 60-54 with less than four minutes remaining.

Kingston Flemings had 17 points for the Cougars, who lost consecutive games for the first time this season after falling 70-67 at No. 6 Iowa State on Monday night to end a six-game winning streak.

No. 7 Purdue 93, Indiana 64: Trey Kaufman-Renn scored 20 points and Braden Smith added 15 points and eight assists Friday night, helping the host Boilermakers (22-5, 12-4 Big Ten) to a historic rout over the rival Hoosiers to earn a split in this season’s series.

Purdue produced its highest point total in the series since scoring 94 points in 1998. It also was its largest victory margin in the series since a 44-point shellacking in 1969.

Lamar Wilkerson scored 18 of his 20 points in the second half for Indiana (17-10, 8-8).

No. 18 Saint Louis 88, VCU 75: Kellen Thames scored 16 points and the host Billikens (25-2, 13-1 Atlantic 10) rallied for a win over the Rams (21-7, 12-3).

No. 22 Miami (Ohio) 91, Bowling Green 77: Luke Skaljac scored a career-high 22 points, Eian Elmer had 21 and the host Redhawks (27-0, 14-0 Mid-American Conference) remained the lone unbeaten team in Division I with a victory over the Falcons (16-12, 7-8).

GOLF

World No. 1 Jeeno Thitikul birdied her final three holes Saturday for a 6-under 66 and a two-stroke lead going into the final round of her home LPGA Thailand tournament.

Thitikul made a 15-foot birdie putt on the par-3 16th to break away from a four-way tie for the lead, then saw her eagle chip just slide past the hole on 18 before tapping in for a birdie.

Thitikul had a 54-hole total of 20-under 196 at the Siam Country Club Old Course.

In second place was Hyo Joo Kim after a 65. Allisen Corpuz (67), second-round leader Somi Lee (72) and Chizzy Iwai (68) were tied for third, three strokes back.

NBA

Centennial High grad Jared McCain scored a season-high 21 points as the Thunder beat the Brooklyn Nets 105-86 on Friday night in Oklahoma City.

McCain, the former Philadelphia 76er who was acquired in a trade this month, posted his highest points total in five games with OKC. He made 7 of 12 field goals and 3 of 6 3-pointers in a reserve role.

Oneka Okongwu scored 22 points for the Hawks in their 128-97 loss to the Miami Heat in Atlanta. In Charlotte, LaMelo Ball had 18 points and six assists in the Hornets’ 118-113 loss to the Cleveland Cavaliers, who have won seven straight.

Rookie Kon Knueppel scored 33 points for the Hornets on seven 3-pointers, giving him 193 made 3s for the season — the second most in NBA history by a rookie. Keegan Murray holds the record with 206 set in the 2022-23 season.

MLB

Bill Mazeroski, the Hall of Fame second baseman who won eight Gold Glove awards for his steady work in the field and the hearts of countless Pittsburgh Pirates fans for his historic walk-off home run in Game 7 of the 1960 World Series, has died at the age of 89.

Pirates owner Bob Nutting said “Maz was one of a kind, a true Pirates legend. ... His name will always be tied to the biggest home run in baseball history and the 1960 World Series championship, but I will remember him most for the person he was: humble, gracious and proud to be a Pirate.”

Mazeroski died Friday, the Pirates said. No cause of death was given.

TENNIS

Venus Williams is getting a wild card into the singles and doubles draws for the BNP Paribas Open next month in Indian Wells.

The 45-year-old will be making her first appearance in the tournament since 2024, when she lost in the first round as a wild card. She’s a three-time semifinalist.

It will be Williams’ 10th career appearance in the tournament, which runs March 4-15.
