RED SOX 11, ANGELS 9

Ceddanne Rafaela curled a home run around the Pesky Pole in the bottom of the ninth inning on Wednesday and the Boston Red Sox rallied after trailing four different times to beat the Los Angeles Angels.

The Angels blew 4-0, 7-5, 8-7 and 9-8 leads, with Rafael Devers bouncing a chopper between the gloves of second baseman Chris Taylor and shortstop Zach Neto behind second base to tie it 9-9 in the eighth.

Each of the first three times the Red Sox scored, Los Angeles answered with runs of its own. But after walking Mike Trout to lead off the ninth, Cooper Criswell (1-0) got the next three batters out to give Boston a chance to walk it off. In the bottom half, Abraham Toro singled with one out and Rafaela hit a 308-foot liner over the short wall that goes from the foul pole toward the bullpens in right.

BREWERS 9, REDS 1

Isaac Collins belted a three-run homer, and Jackson Chourio and Daz Cameron each hit two-run shots as the Milwaukee Brewers won their 12th consecutive series against the Cincinnati Reds. Reds starter Andrew Abbott (5-1) posted a 0.55 ERA in May, but the Brewers handed him his first loss of the season.

PIRATES 3, ASTROS 0

Pittsburgh’s Mike Burrows held Houston in check into the sixth inning to pick up the first victory of his career as the Pirates topped the Astros.

Burrows (1-1), whose rise through the Pirates system was slowed by Tommy John surgery in 2023, allowed five hits and struck out six in 5 1/3 innings. The 25-year-old right-hander took a significant step forward after giving up eight runs in 8 1/3 innings across his first two starts.

NATIONALS 4, CUBS 0

MacKenzie Gore pitched seven innings of three-hit ball and Amed Rosario homered to break a scoreless tie in the seventh as the Washington Nationals beat the Chicago Cubs. Nasim Nuñez added an RBI double in the eighth to chase Cubs starter Matthew Boyd, who carried a perfect game into the sixth before walking Nuñez with one out and then giving up a two-out single to rookie Robert Hassell III.

BLUE JAYS 2, PHILLIES 1

Alejandro Kirk drove in the winning run in the ninth inning and the Toronto Blue Jays beat the Philadelphia Phillies. Vladimir Guerrero Jr. hit a one-out single off former teammate Jordan Romano (4-2) and stole second base. Addison Barger struck out but Kirk won it with a line drive that hit off the wall in right field.

GUARDIANS 4, YANKEES 0

Angel Martínez hit an early two-run homer, Luis Ortiz earned his first win since April 18 and the Cleveland Guardians beat the New York Yankees. Kyle Manzardo also went deep for the Guardians, who scored three times in the first inning and turned a trio of double plays. Ortiz (3-6) allowed three hits and struck out seven in 5 2/3 innings.

RAYS 5, RANGERS 4

Brandon Lowe hit a solo home run in the first inning and added an RBI double to help the Tampa Bay Rays beat the Texas Rangers. Josh Lowe and Brandon Lowe hit back-to-back doubles and Yandy Díaz and Jonathan Aranda followed with consecutive singles before Jake Magnum’s two-run single with two out capped Tampa Bay’s four-run third inning and made it 5-0. Shane Baz (5-3) gave up three runs in five innings and Pete Fairbanks pitched a one-run ninth for his 11th save of the season.

DIAMONDBACKS 2, BRAVES 1

Merrill Kelly allowed one hit in seven dominant innings, outpitching eight-time All-Star Chris Sale, and the Arizona Diamondbacks held off the scuffling Atlanta Braves for their third straight victory. After walking three batters in the ninth to force in a run, Arizona reliever Justin Martinez struck out Michael Harris II with the bases loaded to end it. Kelly (6-2) fanned eight and walked one on 98 pitches.
