Rally House Stores Inc., a Lenexa, Kansas-based sports-merchandise retail chain, will open its second Boulder location this summer at 1346 Pearl St. in a portion of the building that previously housed Lazy Dog Bar & Grill.

SkinnyFats, a Las Vegas-born restaurant concept, was previously slated to take over the space on the north side of the property that Rally House will now occupy. Cannabis-themed sandwich chain Cheba Hut opened in a storefront on the south side of the ex-Lazy Dog space late last year.

Downtown Boulder Partnership vice president of marketing and communications Terri Takata-Smith confirmed to BizWest the planned tenant swap at 1346 Pearl, which was first reported by Axios Boulder.

“We’re thrilled to see activity return to this iconic location — it’s a space that’s been deeply missed since Lazy Dog closed,” she said in an email.

The bar, a mainstay for Boulder sports fans since 2004, served its last beer on a Sunday in October 2019 after a Denver Broncos game.

Pearl Partners LLC, the bar’s ownership group led by Steve Ross, sold the building the month prior to Lazy Dog’s closure to local real estate development and property management firm W.W. Reynolds Cos for more than $6.4 million.

The property, located at a highly visible corner of the Pearl Street Mall near the Boulder Theater and the Avanti Food & Beverage food hall, sat vacant for years after Lazy Dog’s departure.

“That location is truly prime real estate on the Pearl Street Mall, and Rally House’s opening is a sign of the vibrancy and continued momentum of downtown’s stability and growth,” Takata-Smith’s email said. “Just across the street is Hurdle’s Jewelry — a locally owned, family-run business that’s been a cornerstone of the downtown district since 1947. Downtown Boulder continues to be a dynamic mix of legacy businesses and exciting new additions, and we’re incredibly optimistic about what’s ahead.”

Rally House opened its first Boulder store at 2450 Arapahoe Ave. last June, a week after the company unveiled its first store in Colorado in Castle Rock. The store sells a wide selection of CU Buffaloes gear, as well as merchandise from Colorado sports teams, including the Nuggets, Broncos, Avalanche, Rockies, and others. Rally House provides gear from numerous brands like ‘47, Nike, New Era, Tommy Bahama and Starter.
