The weekly party that is the Sonoma Tuesday Night Market, aka the “Farmers Market,” fires up again on Tuesday, May 5, and continues through Sept. 8.
Beginning with the vendors opening their stalls for business at 5 p.m. and the live music’s downbeat at 6 p.m., the market is the social hub of the season for all ages.
Much will soon be written about the different dates; the designated nonprofit entity of the day, the variety of fruits, vegetables, and flowers that will become available as the season moves along, and of course, the bands that will provide the free entertainment.
For the past several years, there has been a monthly performance at Grinstead Amphitheater by a jazz(y) band underwritten by the Sonoma Valley Jazz Society.
Usually presenting a different band each week, the jazz society has a different take this season — a season’s long “residency” by the band known as The Jazz Mafia.
The Jazz Mafia is a very talented consortium of players from all over the Bay Area. This season in the “Horseshoe” area of the Sonoma Plaza, they will gather and perform a special program of familiar and much-loved material from a specific artist or theme.
Please remember the city of Sonoma does compensate the bands — it’s more a labor of love than anything else — but the tip jar is where the music lovers of the Valley of the Tunes can best show their appreciation.
In other words, don’t forget to tip the band!
“Farmers Market Jazz in Grinstead” shows, honoring namesake music artists and featuring performances by The Jazz Mafia, will include:
June 9: Prince Reimagined;
July 14: ’70s Herbie Hancock and Beyond;
Aug. 11: The Birth of the Cool and Beyond;
Sept. 8: Stevie Wonder Reimagined.
