Resident of Clovis
It is with unbelievable sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved Stephen Michael Avalos, M.D., on April 29, 2025, in Clovis, CA. He was born to Felix and Dolores Avalos, both of whom preceded him in death.
He was also preceded in death by his sister, Lori Avalos Bennardo by just over 3 months.
Stephen is survived by his devoted wife Jen Avalos; father-in-law Marcus Jones; sister-in-law Kim Hagobian and her husband Joey; brother-in-law Jeff Jones; and his beloved sister Sheri Avalos Jensen and her husband John.
He also leaves behind nephews Dylan Jensen and his wife Patty, Shane Hagobian and his wife Hannah, Cole Hagobian; nieces Andie Jensen, Breanna Hagobian, Lylah Hagobian; numerous cousins, great-nieces and nephews; and his beloved German Shepherd, Katie.
Stephen spent his early years in Berkeley CA and attended School of the Madeleine through the eighth grade. He was a graduate of Salesian High School in Richmond CA and earned a degree in criminal justice from Sacramento State University. While working at the crime lab during college, he discovered a passion for Pathology that led him to pursue a career in medicine.
Stephen earned his medical degree from Stanford University School of Medicine in 1984. His postgraduate training included an internship and residency in Anatomic Pathology and a fellowship in Surgical Pathology at Stanford University Medical Center. He also completed Clinical Pathology training at Santa Clara Valley Medical Center and a Forensic Pathology fellowship at the Southwestern Institute of Forensic Science in Dallas, TX.
Board-certified in Anatomic, Clinical, and Forensic Pathology. Stephen practiced pathology since 1985 and was a founding member of Pathology Associates.
Stephen had a passion for the things he loved which included his numerous German Shepherds-many of whom accompanied him to the workplace. Stephen did volunteer work with his therapy dog Luna (Team Avalos-as his wife referred to them) through Heavenly Hounds and Therapy Dog International until her passing. He enjoyed collecting horror models, comic books, movies, and comedy shows. Stephen had an infectious smile and an extremely quick wit. He loved helping people and wanted to ensure everyone was cared for. He will be sorely missed by all who knew him.
A funeral service will be held on May 19, 2025, at 10:30 a.m. at Clovis Funeral Chapel, 1302 Clovis Ave., followed by a burial at 12:00 p.m. at the Clovis Cemetery.
The family is requesting in lieu of flowers, donations be made to local no-kill animal shelters or German Shepherd rescue organizations in Stephen’s name.
