The pop culture world was all abuzz overnight Sunday after Madonna used a Tik Tok video to tease the idea that she was coming out as gay.
The 64-year-old music icon has only ever been in public relationships with men, including her ex-husbands Sean Penn and Guy Ritchie, so her video Sunday night shook up social media with speculation and debate. In the five-second clip, the “Vogue” singer is seen holding a pair of pink panties with the caption, “If I miss, I’m Gay.”
She then tosses the underwear towards a waste basket, misses and then gestures, “Oh well.”
The video comes after the singer has been seen in multiple recent video clips, kissing and making out with Dominican rapper and content creator Tokischa, including in the new music video for “Hung Up on Tokischa,” which is a remix of Madonna’s 2005 single “Hung Up.” Maybe after 40 years in the music industry — much of that time showing her alliance with the LGBTQ community — Madonna has finally decided to say something definitive about her sexual orientation.
Neither Madonna nor her reps responded to media inquiries about her intentions with the video. Madonna has previously teased the possibility that she’s not entirely straight, and that she understands how sexuality and identity can be fluid. In 1991, she told LGTBQ magazine The Advocate that she believed “everybody has a bisexual nature.” “That’s my theory. I could be wrong,” she added.
Critics of Madonna said the Tik Tok video could have been the pop star’s way of drumming up attention for her video with Tokischa, or even a desperate effort to remain in the cultural conversation, but many fans wondered how it could even be news that she was coming out as gay.
After some people shared photos of Madonna’s famous on-stage kiss with Britney Spears at the 2003 Video Music Awards, someone else suggested that the singer has been “having sex with women for longer than the internet has existed.” However Madonna self-identities, there’s no disputing that she is one of America’s best known LGBTQ icons.
