Jacob Shaffelburg and Jonathan David scored off defensive misplays, and Canada beat the United States 2-1 in a friendly on Saturday for its first win over the Americans on U.S. soil since 1957.

Coming off defeats to Panama and Uruguay at the Copa America, the U.S. has lost three straight games for the first time since 2015 against Brazil, Mexico and Costa Rica.

Shaffelburg put Canada ahead in the 17th minute after Tim Ream’s pass bounced away from Johnny Cardoso and David added his 29th international goal in the 58th for the lead when Ream turned over the ball in front of his own goal.

Luca de la Torre scored his first international goal for the U.S. in the 66th minute off a pass from Aidan Morris, who entered with de la Torre four minutes earlier.

Canada goalkeeper Maxime Crépeau used his right hand to bat away Ricardo Pepi’s open shot in the 86th.

The Americans played their first game under interim coach Mikey Varas, an assistant who took over after Gregg Berhalter was fired following the team’s first-round exit in the Copa America. The U.S. Soccer Federation has been trying to reach an agreement for Mauricio Pochettino to become the team’s 10th coach in 14 years but has not commented on the talks, which began in mid-August.

Canada had been winless in 23 consecutive games against the U.S. in America since a 3-2 victory at St. Louis in a World Cup qualifier on July 6, 1957 — Canada’s only previous win over the Americans on U.S. soil.

Hill wins again at Atlanta to sweep Xfinity Series

Austin Hill swept the Xfinity Series season at Atlanta Motor Speedway, his home track, as the Georgia native continued to excel under the venue reconfiguration.

Since moving to the drafting track configuration in 2022, Hill has won three of the five Xfinity races at Atlanta. The other two winners — Cup Series regulars Ty Gibbs and John Hunter Nemechek — were not in Saturday’s race.

“It had plenty of speed, we had to dig deep for that one,” said Hill, who won in a Chevrolet for Richard Childress Racing. He did his post-race interview holding his young son, who was wearing a Georgia Bulldogs shirt.

“This is Barrett,” Hill introduced his son as the youngster kept interrupting, ‘Dad, you won.’

“And he’s wild,” Hill continued.

It was the third win of the season for Hill, who opened with back-to-back Xfinity races at Daytona and Atlanta, but then went winless until Saturday. Hill led one time, for the final 21 laps of the race.

Parker Kligerman finished second, and AJ Allmendinger was third in a podium sweep for Chevrolet.

Nuggets star Murray OKs $208M extension

Denver Nuggets star point guard Jamal Murray has agreed to a four-year, $208 million maximum contract extension, a person with knowledge of the deal told the Associated Press.

The person spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity as the deal, which keeps Murray out of free agency next summer, awaited signatures.

Murray made a remarkable return from a torn ACL that sidelined him for all of the 2021-22 season to help lead the Nuggets to the franchise’s first NBA title in 2023.

The extension, which has been in the works for months, will keep Murray in a Nuggets uniform through the 2028-29 season.

The franchise’s leader in 3-pointers, Murray averaged a career-best 21.2 points and 6.5 assists last season.

Injury, deal may keep Bengals starters away

The Bengals could be without their top two receivers, Ja’Marr Chase and Tee Higgins, in the Sunday opener against the Patriots.

Chase, who had limited participation in preseason camp as he awaits an expected contract extension, is listed as questionable. He was a full participant in practice on Friday and told reporters that he and the team are close to reaching a deal. Higgins is listed as questionable with a hamstring injury.
