New York Yankees first baseman Anthony Rizzo is uncertain for the postseason after fracturing the fourth and fifth fingers of his right hand when hit by a pitch from Pittsburgh’s Ryan Borucki in the seventh inning of Saturday’s 9-4 loss to the Pirates.
Yankees manager Aaron Boone said it was too early to determine whether Rizzo will be able to play in the AL Division Series opener on Oct. 5.
Rizzo was hit on the bottom of his hand by Borucki’s 1-2 slider leading off the seventh, the 222nd time Rizzo was hit by a pitch in his big league career. Rizzo winced in pain and stayed in after being checked out by head athletic trainer Tim Lentych.
After the Yankees batted in the seventh, Oswaldo Cabrera moved over to first base from shortstop.
Rizzo missed 62 games with a fractured right forearm after colliding with Red Sox reliever Brennan Bernardino on June 16 at Fenway Park. He hit .228 with eight homers and 35 RBIs in 92 games this season, including .380 (8 for 21) since returning from the injured list on Sept. 1.
Brewers’ Frelick suffers hip injury
The Milwaukee Brewers are preparing for the likelihood they will open the postseason without outfielder Sal Frelick after he injured his hip crashing into the right-field wall Friday against the New York Mets.
Although Frelick said an MRI revealed no ligament damage, he was walking with help from a crutch Saturday as he spoke to reporters. Frelick said he hurt his gluteus medius, a hip muscle that stabilizes the pelvis when someone is standing or walking.
“That’s what took the full brunt of the hip, which is good because it did its job,” Frelick said. “But it’s pretty crushed, so there’s a pretty bad contusion and that’s pretty much what’s not allowing me to walk.”
Brewers manager Pat Murphy said the team isn’t ruling out the possibility that Frelick could return at some point in the postseason. But Murphy added the fact that Frelick isn’t walking on his own makes it apparent the outfielder won’t be available anytime soon.
The NL Central champion Brewers will open the NL wild-card series on Tuesday in Milwaukee.
Frelick has been the Brewers’ regular right fielder and has played exceptional defense while batting .259 with a .320 on-base percentage, two homers, 32 RBIs and 18 steals in 145 games.
Imanaga concludes stellar rookie season
Shota Imanaga won’t start for the Chicago Cubs against Cincinnati today and finished his rookie season 15-3 with a 2.91 ERA in 29 starts.
The 31-year-old left-hander from Japan won’t pitch because the “risk-reward benefit was not there,” manager Craig Counsell said Saturday.
Imanaga struck out 174 and walked 28 in 173 1/3 innings. He was 6-0 with a 2.25 ERA in his last six starts.
Imanaga also set a personal high for wins as a professional, besting a 13-7 mark with Yokohama in 2019.
Bauer earns honor in Mexican League
Trevor Bauer was honored as pitcher of the year in the Mexican Baseball League.
The 33-year-old Bauer got 94 votes from the electing committee. Zac Grotz was second with nine votes.
Bauer went 10-0 with a 2.48 ERA in 14 starts. He led the league in strikeouts with 120 in 83 1/3 innings.
In his first season south of the border, the 10-year major league veteran set a Mexican League record with 19 strikeouts against the Oaxaca Guerreros on June 21. Three pitchers shared the previous mark of 18 for a nine-inning game.
Bauer also struck out nine consecutive batters on April 21 against the Leon Bravos to tie a Mexican League record set by José Ramón López in 1964 and then tied by Gary Williams in 1979.
Bauer, the former Hart High and UCLA standout, has been trying to revive his big league career after serving a 194-game suspension for violating MLB’s domestic violence, sexual assault and child abuse policy. He was never charged with a crime and civil claims against him were settled.
Bauer was released by the Dodgers in January 2023 and the right-hander pitched in Japan last year.In his lone season with the Dodgers, he was 8-5 with a 2.59 ERA over 17 starts in 2021.
The 2020 National League Cy Young Award winner with the Cincinnati Reds originally signed a five-game contract with the Diablos Rojos of Mexico City but then agreed to stay for the reminder of the season.
