Woodland Joint Unified School District will hold its annual Multilingual Achievement Celebration to honor the hundreds of students who have made significant academic achievements toward becoming bilingual and illiterate.

The Multilingual Achievement Celebration and Ceremony will take place on Monday, April 28, at 6 p.m. at the Woodland High School football stadium at 21 N. West St.

Reclassification

According to a press release, WJUSD will recognize 346 students who were English Learners and have now demonstrated English competency, resulting in their reclassification as fluent English proficient. Students will receive a certificate of accomplishment and a medal. Students who meet reclassification criteria demonstrate that they can participate equally with average native speakers in the regular instructional program. This is an important academic accomplishment for students who entered school with limited English proficiency.

Pathway to Biliteracy

Students who are on a pathway to biliteracy will also be recognized. These students have demonstrated progress toward proficiency in speaking, listening, reading, and writing in Spanish and English. We are recognizing 126 students districtwide, and our current 8th-grade students will join this ceremony to receive a certificate of accomplishment and a medal.

State Seal of Biliteracy

WJUSD will present 150 State Seal of Biliteracy awards to seniors for their linguistic accomplishments, acknowledging their oral and written competency in at least two languages. We will be awarding four double Seals and one triple Seal. This year’s languages include Spanish, French, Fijian, American Sign Language, Sinhala, Hindi, Nepali, Urdu, and Punjabi.

State Seal of Biliteracy recipients will also be honored with a medal, certificate of accomplishment, and a sash commemorating their academic achievement, a State Seal on their high school diploma, and a transcript notation.
