Cabrillo College sophomore forward Solomon Tucker was named the Coast Conference South Division’s Co-Defensive Player of the Year after a recent vote of coaches during all-conference voting. He shared the honor with West Valley guard Ariya Briscoe.
Tucker and sophomore guard Darius Best were named to the all-conference first team after leading the Seahawks (23-5, 8-4) to a tie for second place and a school record for wins in the regular season.
Tucker finished with 341 points, 226 rebounds, 37 assists, 39 steals and 54 blocks. Best finished with 437 points, 100 rebounds, 102 assists, 39 steals and six blocks.
Sophomore forward Elijah Mahi was named MVP after leading the unbeaten Vikings (28-0, 12-0) to the South Division title. Three of his teammates, freshman center Shakir Odunewu, and sophomore guards Jeremiah Dargan and Baron Bracey, were named to the first team. Odunewu was named the Freshman Player of the Year.
Also on the first team were: San Jose City sophomores Isaiah Saams-Hoy and Jacob Harper, Gavilan sophomores Fabian Reichstadt and Isaiah Hinds, and Foothill sophomore Kendall WInston,
Cabrillo guard Jalen Cunningham was named to the second team and All-Freshman Team. Seahawks sophomore guard Taray Winfrey was an honorable mention selection, as was Gavilan sophomore guard Cameron Saldana, an Aptos alum.
Cabrillo hosts a second-round game in the CCCAA NorCal Regional playoffs on Saturday at 7 p.m. Its opponent is to be determined.
Women’s basketball
All-Northwest Conference >> Willamette University sophomore guard Kaitlin Imai, a Scotts Valley alumna, was an honorable mention selection during All-Northwest Conference voting.
Imai helped the Bearcats (17-8, 14-2) win the NWC regular-season championship and qualify for the NCAA Division III Women’s Basketball Tournament. They’ll play Millikin (22-5) at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater in the first round on Friday.
Imai has averaged 10.3 points, 3.3 rebounds and 2.7 assists over 26 games, including 25 starts.
High school baseball
Seaside 10, at Watsonville 7 >> Josh Ybarra II had two hits, including a double, two RBI, and scored twice in the Wildcatz’s nonleague loss Monday.
The Spartans broke up a 6-all tie with their four-run sixth inning.
Brody Legions had three hits, including a double, one RBI, and scored twice for the Wildcatz. Aiden Rodriguez doubled twice and had one RBI. Mateo Lopez had three of the Wildcatz’s seven stolen bases.
Lopez also had a hit and run scored, as did teammate Rudy Valdez.
Watsonville (0-2) plays at Soquel (1-1) on Tuesday at 3:30 p.m.
Girls lacrosse
MVC 9, at Harker 0 >> Kyra Driscoll had four goals and two draw controls in the Mustangs’ season opening win Monday.
Maya Moore scored twice, and Rhazelle Gonzales, Sophia Sheridan and Alexa Malaspina each scored a goal. Malaspina also had six draw controls.
Goalie Jana Bacero-Duncan made two saves and recorded the shutout for the Mustangs (1-0), who host Live Oak on Tuesday at 5 p.m.
Golf
Hole-in-one >> Scotts Valley’s Jeff Fraser aced the 170-yard eighth hole at Pasatiempo Golf Club on Thursday with a 6-iron. It’s his second career ace.
