The Alhambra baseball team erased some demons by winning the first two games of its three-game series against Montebello, beating the Oilers 6-4 on Wednesday to clinch the Almont League title and avoid a winner-take-all scenario today at Montebello.

Alhambra also beat Montebello, 4-3, on Tuesday.

“It’s sweet,” Alhambra coach Jovan Ramirez said. “Those guys have had our number. It would have been a rough couple days if we had to wait it out and go there again, especially with all the success they’ve had against us.”

After falling behind 2-0 in the second inning, the Moors (19-4-1, 13-1) erupted for four runs in the fourth inning and added two more in the fifth. They held on to beat the Oilers (16-8, 11-3) and win their first league championship since 2017.

The win ended the Oilers’ streak of six straight league titles; the Moors finished runner-up all six times.

“Montebello celebrated the last couple years on our field,” Ramirez said. “So, for our team to experience this and get over the hump, it is really satisfying. They’re just a hard-working group.”

This is Ramirez’s third season as head coach.

“When we came in we were in the middle of (Montebello’s league winning) streak,” Ramirez said. “Beating them and winning league is a big accomplishment for our staff, our program and these kids. They come in with the mindset to work hard and grind it out every day.”

In Wednesday’s win, Moors sophomore Leon Wang was 3 for 4 with a double, RBI and scored twice. Mark Hernandez and Gavin Escobedo drove in two runs apiece.

Alhambra had a chance to win the league title last year, taking two of three against Montebello, but it had losses to other league opponents and finished second. The Moors finished 22-8 and reached the CIF Southern Section Division 6 quarterfinals.

To have a better season this spring is a mild surprise. The Moors graduated seven starting seniors from last year’s group, and they don’t have a true ace on the mound.

“We don’t, we have kind of pieced it together with our pitching staff,” Ramirez said. “Aiden Kim pitched in (Tuesday’s) win over Montebello, and he has kind of been that guy. But we truly throw a lot of staff games, and guys have supported each other and thrived in their roles.”

Hernandez, a junior, has been their rock. He bats leadoff, plays center field and is batting .434 with 23 RBIs and three home runs.

Hernandez did not pitch last season, but he has become the team’s closer with a 1.08 ERA in 13 innings with 20 strikeouts.

“Mark is that guy who comes up clutch in big games,” Ramirez said. “He had a streak in the middle of the season where he hit a home run three games in a row. We don’t see that a lot at Alhambra. And as far as pitching, he’s a kid who just wants it. He wants to be in that situation to win a game for us, and he’s been great in that spot.”

Based on the CIF-SS computer rankings, the Moors will most likely land in Division 5 or Division 6 for the CIF-SS playoffs that begin in two weeks.
