WALPOLE >> It all happened in a blink for Walpole.

And when the No. 4 Timberwolves continued their Division 2 quarterfinal matchup Monday with fifth-seeded Westfield, which was suspended in the top of the eighth inning Saturday due to rain, Walpole’s season came to an end in just seven minutes.

Caitlyn Arooth’s two-run single in extra innings completed a Westfield comeback that started two days prior and lifted the Bombers over the defending state champion Timberwolves, 5-3, at S.M Lorusso & Sons Athletic Field Complex. “You never know what would have happened without that weather,” Walpole coach Rachael Sprague said. “They were still making that comeback in the seventh and you never know, maybe they would have kept the momentum and we would have lost it on Saturday without the rain. You just never know.

“It is one of those ones it’s going to sting for a long time, for sure.”

Westfield took a two-hour bus ride east to Walpole again and wasted no time once the game resumed.

Arooth, the No. 8 hitter in Westfield’s order, was the first batter up and had runners on first and second with one out. The Bombers planned for Arooth to sacrifice bunt the runners over but a wild pitch took care of that.

Arooth, who had a hand in Westfield’s three-run rally in the seventh inning with an RBI base knock to force things to a second day, came through again by dropping in a single to right-center field to break the 3-3 deadlock.

“I have been in a slump all season, practically,” Arooth said. “But I knew I had a job (being up) at first. So we practiced a couple things at practice. So I was ready for it, and I was ready for everything. I luckily got my pitch.”

Westfield senior ace Shea Hurley then made quick work of the top of Walpole’s order. She got a pop-out to start the frame before striking out the final two batters to secure the Bombers’ third trip to the final four in the last four seasons.

“Made the trip back worth it for sure,” Westfield coach Tyson James said. “Obviously, it wasn’t a great situation the other day with the rain hitting and them stopping the game. But we rolled with the punches, came back out here, had a little plan and it worked out.”
