“GOLF TOURNEY TO OPEN MONDAY >> A handicap golf tournament starts Sunday morning at 8 a.m. for two silver loving cups offered by Joe Murphy.” (Joe Murphy had a sporting goods store at 218 Broadway.)

“Because of the large number of entries only contenders for the cup who have registered for the tournament will be allowed the privileges of the course Sunday morning.

“The following have registered their intention of competing for the cup and have handed in at least five scores for the computing of the handicaps: Joe Murphy, J.F. “Peter Selkirk, a recent arrival from Scotland and a brother of William Selkirk, professional at the Del Paso Country Club, Sacramento has taken up his residence at 4134 Ninth Street in this city, and will be available for instruction at least three days each week hereinafter. Selkirk has considerable golfing experience and all those who have seen his game say that he swings a wicked club.”

(Commentary: It’s interesting that during this era, the first names of men — and women — were typically omitted and only the first one or two initials were used. Women were referred to as Mrs. J.E. Jones, etc.)
