One person was killed and two others were seriously hurt early Sunday when a car crossed into oncoming traffic on Lakeville Highway south of Petaluma, authorities said.

The crash happened around 6 a.m. near Old Lakeville Road No. 3. The California Highway Patrol said a Ford Mustang tried to pass another car and veered into the opposite lane, hitting a Honda HR-V head-on.

A passenger in the Honda died at the scene. The driver of the Honda and the driver of the Mustang were taken to Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital with serious injuries.

Officers said the Mustang driver, whose name was not immediately released, was under the influence of alcohol and drugs and was arrested. Six people inside the car being passed — a Toyota Highlander — were not hurt.

The highway was closed for about four hours while crews cleared the wreckage.

Lakeville Highway, a two-lane road connecting Petaluma and Highway 37, has been the site of several deadly crashes in recent years. Residents have long urged safety improvements along the busy commuter route.
