A Michigan man accused of embezzling more than $400,000 from a family trust is heading to prison, officials said.

David White was sentenced last week to four to 20 years in prison, Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel’s office announced.

In November, an Oakland County jury found the 68-year-old guilty of one count of conducting a criminal enterprise; two counts of embezzlement by an agent/trustee of $50,000 or more but less than $100,000; one count of embezzlement by an agent/trustee of $1,000 or more but less than $20,000; and six counts of failure of filing taxes.

Authorities say White, from Union City south of Battle Creek, became the co-trustee of the John Stirling White Trust in 2014 when his father, John Stirling White, died. Though John White had several adult children, the assets held in the trust were never distributed to the beneficiaries due to ongoing litigation, according to Nessel’s office. David White controlled its income, expenses and access to financial records.

In 2019, he was removed as co-trustee by the probate court because of failing to comply with court orders to produce financial accountings for the trust, officials said.

An investigation by Nessel’s found he embezzled at least $400,000 from the trust between 2014 and 2019.

“I am grateful to the prosecutors in my office for their diligent work and the family member who brought this case to our attention during our Elder Abuse Listening Tour, ultimately leading to charges being issued,” Nessel said in the release. “The estates of departed loved ones deserve to be managed with respect, and my office will continue to hold accountable those who abuse this trust.”

A restitution hearing will be held on May 9.

An attorney representing White could not immediately be reached for comment Monday.

The sentencing follows several embezzlement cases across Metro Detroit in recent months.

Last month, a West Bloomfield Township woman and a Livingston County man were accused of embezzling money from vulnerable adults.

In December, Nessel’s office charged a South Lyon woman with embezzling hundreds of thousands of dollars from a man with cognitive impairment.

Her case was bound over to Oakland County Circuit Court for trial.

In September, a Southfield man was charged for allegedly embezzling more than $7,000 from eight vulnerable adults at a Warren nursing home.
