MONTEREY COUNTY >> A fire that broke out Tuesday night at the same battery storage facility that went up in flames last month was under control by early Wednesday afternoon, according to authorities.
The fire at the Vistra Battery Facility storage plant brought a Tuesday night warning from Monterey County’s emergency warning system that residents near the Moss Landing Harbor needed to remain indoors and close windows.
In an update posted about 11:45 a.m. Wednesday, county authorities said the air quality also was considered good. The Monterey Bay Area Resource District reviewed measurements from their smoke sensor monitoring system to determine the quality of the air, authorities said.
Authorities did not report any injuries.
In an emergency alert at 10:30 p.m. Tuesday, officials said light smoke and fire were coming from the battery plant, where a Jan. 16 blaze forced about 1,200 residents to evacuate. Authorities in the warning urged residents to stay indoors and close windows “out of an abundance of caution.”
Fire crews and other authorities still were monitoring the plant Wednesday afternoon. The Jan. 16 fire flared back after officials said it was smoldering.
That blaze ripped through the facility when its internal fire suppression system failed, authorities said. An earlier emergency alert message from Monterey County said Tuesday’s fire began in the burned out area from the January fire.
A group of Monterey County residents filed a lawsuit in Alameda County against several companies for damages following last month’s blaze. Gov. Gavin Newsom also called for an investigation into it.
The facility is located near state Highway 1 and Dolan Road.
