Xavier Booker is looking for a fresh start.

A former five-star recruit who struggled to make his mark with Michigan State, Booker entered the transfer portal Tuesday, a Michigan State spokesperson confirmed.

He averaged 4.7 points and 2.2 rebounds in his sophomore season.

Booker started the season with high expectations, but he failed to meet them. After an up-and-down freshman year, he began his most recent season with a spot in the starting lineup. That lasted three games before Jaxon Kohler took his spot, and Booker spent the rest of the season coming off the bench. His minutes dwindled down the stretch, and he sat on the bench for almost the entirety of Michigan State’s NCAA Tournament run to the Elite Eight.

At 6-foot-11 and 240 pounds, Booker has the size to be an impact player. Wielding it is the issue.

More accustomed to floor-stretching with pick-and-pop 3s, Booker struggled to read rebounds and show aggression down low. He had a breakout game in November against North Carolina with 12 points and seven rebounds, sparking a run of four straight games of double-digit scoring that culminated in 18 points in a December win over Oakland. His contributions became much more secondary in Big Ten play.

Booker joined Michigan State as the highest-rated recruit of the Tom Izzo era, ranked No. 11 in the country by 247Sports and No. 2 among centers. Some analysts, including ESPN, ranked him the top center in the country. He was a Naismith high school player of the year finalist at Cathedral High School in Indiana and earned a McDonald’s All-American nod.

Michigan State’s Kohler and Carson Cooper return from last year’s big man rotation, with the graduation of Szymon Zapala another blow to the unit’s depth. Redshirt freshman Jesse McCulloch could provide some spark at forward, but it appears Michigan State will need to pursue the addition of another big this offseason.

Booker is Michigan State’s third player to enter the transfer portal, joining guards Tre Holloman and Gehrig Normand.
