MARTINEZ >> A former California corrections officer has been sent to prison after pleading no contest to molesting a girl who was under his father’s care at an Antioch foster home, and his father awaits trial for allegedly molesting four victims.

Simon Chavez Jr., 34, was sentenced to six years in state prison in a plea deal finalized last June, court records show. He pleaded no contest to a single count of molesting a girl younger than 14 years old and is scheduled to be released in 2024.

Meanwhile, Chavez Jr.’s father, Simon Chavez Sr., 68, is facing dozens of felonies and awaiting trial in 2023. At a court appearance last week, attorneys affirmed his trial has been tentatively set for April 24, with a readiness conference a week earlier to confirm it.

The two were charged in 2019, and additional charges were added the following year. At their 2020 preliminary hearing, it was revealed that Chavez Jr. admitted to a Contra Costa County Children and Family Services employee that he’d kissed a teen foster child, but foster children continued to be brought to Chavez Sr.’s home on Bear Ridge Way in Antioch for the next six years.

Chavez Sr. is charged with sexually abusing four girls, and Chavez Jr. was originally charged with sexually abusing two, including the girl he admitted to kissing. One of the victims reported being molested by both father and son, according to police.

A girl known in court records as Jane Doe 1 told police that when she was 11, Chavez Jr. began making sexual advances toward her. The molestation started soon after and lasted until she turned 17 and left the foster home. One day, when Jane Doe 1 was 13, Chavez Sr. walked in on Chavez Jr. raping her, police testified. He began acting angry, grabbed the girl and took her away. But instead of bringing her to safety, Chavez Sr. brought the girl into his own bedroom, she later told police.

“(Chavez Sr.) said that she was going to do with him what she did with Simon Jr.,” Antioch police Detective Kelly Inabnett testified at the preliminary hearing. From then on, Chavez Sr. also began raping the girl at least once a week for the next four years, Inabnett testified.
