Robert “Bob” Basil McKean, 81, of Berkeley, passed away peacefully at home on January 20, 2025. Born in Berkeley on March 24, 1943, Bob lived a vibrant and adventurous life filled with love, laughter, and resilience.

Agraduate of Berkeley High School and amember of the Athenian Society, Bob was known for his sharp wit, independent spirit, and passion for motorcycles, fishing, and the outdoors. He earned the nickname “Dusty” during his early years working in a Berkeley cement factory—a name that stayed with him throughout his life.

In 1967, Bob married Kathy Holmboe. In 1970, they moved with their young sons to the Sierra foothills, living off the grid in Strawberry Valley. Bob worked for the U.S.

Forest Service, a logging company, and served as a hotshot firefighter battling wildfires across the West. He later returned to the Bay Area, where he enjoyed a long and respected career in the trucking industry as a proud Teamster.

Bob later married Susan, with whom he shared many joyful years filled with family, Harley rides, and weekends in the Sacramento Delta.

He is survived by his sons Jacob (Bend, OR), Aaron (Santa Barbara, CA), and Nathaniel (North Truro, MA); his sister Patricia; stepchildren Kathy, Stacy, and Jim; six grandchildren and a step-grandson, Gregory; and nieces Kathy, Colleen, and Brianna. He will be remembered for his humor, devotion to family, and zest for life.

A celebration of Bob's life will be at St Joseph's Cemetery in SanPablo July 19th at 2 pm.
