Ryan Blaney loves racing at Michigan International Speedway.

The two-mile superspeed is considered NASCAR’s fastest track, a place Blaney — the 2023 Cup series champion — has had success on, winning in 2021.

Blaney told The Detroit News on Wednesday that he had just landed in Detroit and was looking forward to being in Ford’s backyard — and his owner Roger Penske’s backyard as well — during MIS weekend.

Blaney and Team Penske teammates Joey Logano and Austin Cindric will be running in Sunday’s Firekeepers 400. Practice is set for this morning with qualifying this afternoon to make up the field.

“Everybody in the Team Penske organization loves their craft and I feel they really show their respect in working for Roger,” said Blaney, who joined Team Penske in 2013 while competing in the Xfinity series, then competed in the Cup series with them in ’14. “I’ve been with Roger since the summer of ’12 and the time has gone by incredibly fast. I hope to be here another 13 years. I feel like I drew the lucky straw as a 19-year-old.”

Logano joined Team Penske in 2013, the year after Rochester Hills’ Brad Keselowski earned Penske his first Cup series championship.

Logano has added Cup series titles for Penske in 2018, 2022 and last year. He also has multiple wins at MIS (2013, ’16 and ’19), also earning a playoff spot this season with a win at Texas.

Blaney is coming to MIS with momentum after dominating last Sunday at Nashville, leading for 139 laps, including the final 32 to earn his first victory of the season to get locked into the playoffs.

It’s not like Blaney hasn’t been close to reaching Victory Lane this season either, earning six top-fives, a reason he sits seventh in points.

“We’ve been strong all season, working well together, so it nice to complete the deal and get a win,” said Blaney. “We’ve had mechanical issues like when we led the most laps at Homestead and blew a motor. We had a strong car at Vegas and got caught up in a wreck, just things like that happening.”

Blaney, who competes in the No. 12 Ford, enjoys running at MIS because “it’s a big, fast track, and you have to have a lot of commitment, a lot grit heading into Turn 1. It’s like, how much do I want to push it, because you can throw the throttle down.”

He added: “It’s a big, wide track where you have a lot of options, and then, the wind is usually blowing down the back stretch and you have your hands full heading into Turn 3 because that big tailwind hits you hard on the left side and pushes you on up the track, so you have to be aware of that.”

There will be a lot for Blaney and his teammates to be aware of this weekend but pleasing Penske will be atop the list.

William Byron and Kyle Larson of Rick Hendrick Motorsports sit 1-2 in the points with each driver owning a series-high three races in Chevrolets, along with Christopher Bell of Joe Gibbs Racing in a Toyota.

Cindric, son of former Team Penske IndyCar president Tim Cindric, who was fired after the cheating scandal during Indy 500 qualifying, is also in the playoff field with his win at Talladega. He is driving for his career — his contract runs through 2026 — with just four wins in four years with the team.

Blaney has 14 wins with Penske and Logano has reached Victory Lane 35 times, a reason Team Penske is among the Cup’s top three teams and fighting it out for series championships on an annual basis.
