Lorenzo Musetti and Aryna Sabalenka eased into the second round of the French Open without dropping a set on Sunday’s opening day.

The eighth-seeded Musetti won 7-5, 6-2, 6-0 against qualifier Yannick Hanfmann of Germany, after the top-ranked Sabalenka earlier beat Kamilla Rakhimova 6-1, 6-0.

Musetti has been in strong form on clay, reaching at least the semifinals in the past three Masters tournaments at Rome, Madrid and Monte Carlo, where he lost in the final to four-time Grand Slam champion Carlos Alcaraz. But he was hampered by a right-leg injury in that match.

Musetti did not look troubled on Sunday, however, and cupped his ear to the crowd after making an improbable forehand winner down the line from Hanfmann’s drop shot during the third set.

After winning his match, Musetti got a huge ovation from the crowd on Court Philippe-Chatrier.

Nadal honored at French Open >> A ceremony honoring 14-time French Open champion Rafael Nadal has started at Court Philippe-Chatrier, the stadium where he won a record 14 championships at the clay-court Grand Slam tournament.

Thousands of spectators gave Nadal a standing ovation as he walked out from the doorway he strode through so often onto a court he ruled like no one ever has in the history of tennis.

He smiled broadly and waved at the applauding, adoring crowd, which seemed to occupy just about every seat in the 15,000-capacity venue.

Iwai earns first LPGA title >> Chisato Iwai took a tournament up for grabs and turned it into her own highlight show, making five birdies in her opening six holes for a 6-under 66 and a six-shot victory in the Mexico Riviera Maya Open for her first LPGA title.

Iwai led from the opening hole at El Camaleon when she made birdie and Jenny Bae made bogey, and the 22-year-old from Japan was on her way.

She ran off four straight birdies, poured in every putt that mattered and then cruised home to become the third LPGA rookie to win this season.

Ohtani faces batters for first time since surgery >> Shohei Ohtani faced hitters for the first time since elbow surgery, throwing 22 pitches at Citi Field before the Los Angeles Dodgers played the New York Mets.

With dozens of reporters watching from the stands more than 4 1/2 hours ahead of gametime, the two-way superstar pitched to five batters in a simulated setting — including teammates Hyeseong Kim and Dalton Rushing.

Dodgers manager Dave Roberts and pitching coach Mark Prior watched closely from the field. Prior said Ohtani’s fastball ranged from 94-97 mph, and the right-hander also threw off-speed pitches.
