Soquel High’s first loss during its historic 2025 boys tennis campaign was also its last.

Hudson Ward and Benja Bellito won their singles matches, but the Knights suffered a 5-2 loss to Burlingame in the first round of the Central Coast Section Team Championship at Imperial Courts in Aptos on Wednesday.

“It’s bittersweet,” Knights coach Ron Ward said. “Doing what Soquel did, it was a great season. First time winning league. It was great, as a coach and player, obviously. This season is something they’ll always remember.”

Soquel (10-1 overall), winner of the Santa Cruz Coast Athletic League for the first time in school history, sees its season come to a close, though three Knights will compete in the CCS Singles and Doubles Championships on May 20-22.

Burlingame (12-3) plays No. 2 seed Harker (12-3) in the second round at Del Mar High in San Jose on Friday at 4 p.m.Ward beat rallied from a 2-0 deficit in the first set for a 6-2, 6-2 win over Kaden Lam at No. 1 singles.

Bellito beat Noah Chiang 6-4, 6-1 at No. 2 singles.

In other singles matches, Soquel’s Leo Hagedorn lost 6-0, 6-1 to Alex Bozinvic at No. 3, and Americo Castillo lost 6-1, 6-0 to Caleb Chou at No. 4.

Soquel was swept in doubles action. No. 1 Torin Miller and Nate Marcus lost 6-4, 6-1, No. 2 Colby Negro and Cian Francis lost 6-1, 6-0, and No. 3 Matteo Anulfo and Liam Stiller lost 6-0, 6-2.

Ward faces No. 2 Arjun Krishnan of Lynbrook in the first round of the CCS Singles Championship at Imperial Courts on May 20 at 10 a.m.

Bellito and Miller face No. 4 Devin Stuppin and Marco Magnano of Saint Ignatius in the first round of the CCS Doubles Championship at Imperial Courts on May 21 at 10 a.m.

Boys lacrosse

Aptos 13, at Pacific Grove 12, OT >> Parker O’Hara scored in sudden-death overtime to secure the PCAL Mission Division title over the season-place Breakers on Wednesday.

Midfielder Alex Sandoval had five goals and one assist to lead the Mariners, who jumped out to an 8-1 lead against the Breakers (10-3, 10-2).

The Mariners (13-2, 11-1) host Los Gatos (8-9, 7-2), the PCAL Gabilan Division runner-up, in a CCS play-in game on Friday night at 4 p.m.

High school baseball

Alvarez 6, at Monte Vista Christian 4 >> The Mustangs were dealt a big blow Wednesday in their bid to win the PCAL Mission Division title.

MVC dropped out of tie for first place with its loss, combined with Stevenson’s win. The Mustangs are a game behind the Pirates (13-7, 9-2) with three games remaining in league play. MVC plays at Everett Alvarez (9-13, 3-8) on Friday at 4 p.m. and faces Alisal (13-8, 6-5) twice next week. Stevenson faces Rancho San Juan (8-16, 2-9) on Friday and plays Greenfield (13-6, 5-6) twice next week.

Evan Vessey had three hits, two RBI, one RBI for the Mustangs. Brady Cortez and Gerard Tershey each a had a hit and scored a run. Carter Wright doubled and had one RBI.

Diego Corona had two hits and one RBI for the Eagles.

Men’s golf

U.S. Open Local Qualifying >> Three locals missed the cut at U.S. Open Local Qualifying at The Preserve Golf Course in Carmel on Wednesday.

The cut line was 70. Aptos’ Sean Etow (76), Scotts Valley’s Lucius Niesen (78), and Santa Cruz’s Jackson Lutz (82) fell short of that mark.

The low five scorers qualified for Final Qualifying. Joseph Lloyd of Scottsdale, Arizona, shot 6-under-par 66 for medalist honors. Corral de Tierra’s Jered Stone (69), Fremont’s Taylor Travis (69), Salinas’ AJ Fitzgerald (69), and Auburn’s Lucas Carper (70) also advanced from the site.

Carper won a playoff against Seaside’s Nick Randazzo to move on. Randazzo is the first alternate for the site.

Los Angeles’ Ryan Slater, an MVC alum, shot 78. Carmel’s Bobby Clampett, 65, who tied for third at the 1982 U.S. Open, shot 79.

High school softball

At Pajaro Valley 10, Marina 9 >> Senior Elena Barron triple and homered in the Grizzlies’ PCAL Cypress Division win on Wednesday.

Jaqueline Alvarez Zavala had two hits, three RBI, and scored a run for the Grizzlies. Hemeria Delatorre had two hits, two RBI, and scored twice. Virginia Escobar had two hits and scored twice, and Nadia Renteria had a hit and scored twice.

Delatorre earned the complete-game win. She gave up eight hits, three walks, and five earned runs while striking out a season-high 14 batters.

Pajaro Valley (7-10, 5-4) plays at Anzar on Friday at 4:30 p.m.

North Salinas 6, at Watsonville 2 >> Esperanza Sigala had a hit, one RBI, and a run scored in the Wildcatz’s PCAL Gabilan Division loss Wednesday.

Ruiz Bella tripled and scored a run for the Wildcatz (11-11, 1-8), and Ashley Callen had one RBI.

The Wildcatz committed five errors. Only one of the Vikings’ runs was earned.

Watsonville hosts Palma (5-13-1, 2-7) on Friday at 4:30 p.m.

Men’s track and field

CCAA Championships >> Chico State sophomore Brody Staley, a Soquel alum, medaled in four events at the California Collegiate Athletic Association Championships at Stanislaus State in Turlock on May 1-3.

Staley took first in the 400-meter dash (46.73) and 4×400 relay (3:12.00), second in the 200 (21.13), and third in the 4×100 relay (40.90) to help the Wildcats win the team title.
