Usually, November is when the Colorado cross country teams make their big surge.
But this has been a rare reboot season for the program, and the finish line might be closer than usual for the Buffaloes this season.
For the first time in recent memory, the Buffs weren’t a major factor at regionals, with the CU men finishing fifth and the women placing sixth at the NCAA Mountain Regional on Friday in snowy conditions in Reno, Nev.
Both teams will await potential at-large invitations to the NCAA championships next week but under first-year head coach Sean Carlson, hired just ahead of the season to replace Mark Wetmore, a couple of significant streaks are in jeopardy.
The CU men have appeared in 32 consecutive NCAA finals, the longest active streak in the nation, while the women have competed in 15 in a row and 31 of the past 32.
The CU men scored 157 points, trailing fourth-place Utah State. BYU won the men’s race with 52, followed by New Mexico (61) and Northern Arizona (71).
Isaiah Givens was the top finisher for the CU men on the 10K course, placing 17th with a time of 29 minutes, 41.1 seconds. The Buffs’ James Overberg finished 27th (29:54.3).
The CU women finished with 169 points, eight behind fifth-place Utah Valley. BYU also won the women’s race, finishing with 52, followed by Northern Arizona (65), New Mexico (111) and Utah (122). Jessie Secor posted the top individual mark for either Buffs team, finishing 11th in the 6K women’s race with a time of 20:10.2. Abbey Nechanicky placed 16th, finishing in 20:13.7.
The team at-large berths for the NCAA championships will be announced on Saturday.
