FREMONT — An RV owner in Fremont told authorities that he fatally shot a longtime friend last week — one who allegedly barged into his vehicle while waiving a sharpened metal pipe and threatening to stab him, court documents show.
Greg White, 56, was arrested and jailed hours after the fatal shooting of Frank Bingham, 39, which happened on the outskirts of a homeless encampment along Northport Loop West in Fremont. Yet court documents show White has only faced minor firearms charges in the shooting, and that Fremont police have investigated whether White acted in self-defense.
The shooting happened around 10:35 a.m. July 1, prompting police to flood the encampment with officers. Once there, they found White inside the RV and Bingham laying in a nearby bush with a single gunshot wound. Bingham was rushed to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Witnesses told investigators that Bingham appeared to be “agitated and argumentative” at White throughout that morning — showing up at one point and slamming things around the vehicle, according to court documents. Other witnesses reported that they saw Bingham poking a copper pipe — which had been sharpened at one end — in the direction of White, who had to dodge it, the documents said.
White later told investigators that he and Bingham had been friends for years, and that he repeatedly warned Bingham to back away from his RV on the day of the shooting, court documents show.
White suspected that his friend had used methamphetamine that day, the documents said, and added that the argument led to a long “standoff” at the RV.
At one point, White told authorities, Bingham said he’d take the RV and tried to stab White while at the door of the RV, according to court documents. It all happened while Bingham appeared “enraged,” said White, who spoke to investigators for three hours.
Finally, White said he used a .233 rifle to shoot Bingham one time in the shoulder in self-defense, causing Bingham to flee, the documents show. Security footage showed Bingham running to the door of a nearby business and — finding it locked — then stumbled into a bush, according to court records.
After firing the shot, White told investigators that he sat in his vehicle and waited for police to arrive.
White told investigators he also smoked methamphetamine prior to the shooting. However, White was adamant that he merely fired the shot to protect himself, saying he felt trapped in the RV without any way to escape through its windows, according to court records.
White also didn’t know that Bingham had died from his injury while speaking to detectives — repeatedly asking about his friend, and saying he “hoped he was all right,” the records show.
Fremont police arrested White later that day on suspicion of several charges, including murder.
Two days later, on July 3, White pleaded no contest to possession of a firearm by a felon, as well as possession of ammunition by a prohibited person. The charges were tied to a 2012 felony drug conviction.
White remained held in the Santa Rita Jail on Thursday afternoon without bail, while awaiting a sentencing hearing on Aug. 1. No murder or manslaughter charges have been filed in the case, which marked Fremont’s second homicide of 2025.
