Hobart and surrounding fire departments battled a blaze Thursday night in a home in the Deep River Estates that contained oxygen and ammunition.

Lt. John Reitz, Hobart Fire Department spokesman, said there was a small explosion as firefighters prepared to enter the house near 61st Avenue and Deep River Drive. He said it came from an unidentified compressed gas cylinder.

Reitz said there were no injuries as neighboring departments from Gary, Merrillville, Lake Station and Crown Point helped fight the blaze at about 2 a.m. Friday. He said Hobart firefighters were also battling a blaze on the city’s northwest side at the same time.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

The sole occupant of the house self-evacuated without injury.

The American Red Cross is assisting the family.
