MONTEREY >> Much of the Monterey Peninsula was without power for about an hour Thursday morning after a “transmission-level” failure according to PG&E.

Power went out at around 7:50 a.m. for about 55,000 customers from Prunedale in the north down the coast through Monterey and Pacific Grove and into Carmel according to a PG&E outage map. Crews were able to restore power in phases with the first customers getting back by 8:05 a.m. By around 9 a.m. most of the Peninsula had been restored.

The outage apparently originated in transmission lines. They transport bulk electricity at high voltages and are usually supported on tall metal towers. They are different than distribution lines that deliver electricity to neighborhoods and communities over a shorter distance and are generally supported by wooden poles and not as high as transmission lines.

PG&E also said crews worked to remotely restore power.

“When we restore power remotely, we reconnect customers to other power sources that are not impacted,” explained Mayra Tostado, a PG&E spokesperson. “We do this during all types of events, including during storms, heat waves or any other outage on any given day.”

The cause of the outage is still under investigation.
