EASTVALE — Good things happen when Aiden Shaw gets into the lane.

Shaw, a sophomore point guard, sliced and diced his way through Roosevelt’s defense Friday evening and tallied a game-high 28 points and seven assists as Bishop Amat pulled away for a 65-51 win in a CIF Southern Section Division 2 semifinal boys basketball playoff game.

Bishop Amat advanced to the section finals for the fourth time in program history and first time since 2018. The Lancers (27-5) will face Hesperia, a 57-52 winner over Mater Dei, for the Division 2 crown on Friday or Saturday at a site and time to be determined.

“He was pretty special tonight,” Bishop Amat coach Brandon Ertle said of Shaw. “We’ve done a pretty good job spreading our scoring around this season. Tonight, Aiden did a great job getting to the basket or finding teammates for some open shots.”

Roosevelt, last year’s Open Division section and state champion, saw its 11-game postseason winning streak come to an end.

“We just didn’t follow the game plan,” said Johnny Dukes, who is in his first season at Roosevelt. “We knew that (Shaw) liked to drive. He had 19 free-throw shots in their previous game. We pressured him too high up the court and he kept getting by.”

The teams traded jabs in the first half, and Roosevelt (19-14) took a 27-24 lead at halftime. Jackson Haggins knocked down three 3-pointers for the Mustangs in the opening half, and Travis Walton Jr. made two more.

The score was tied at 38 midway through the third quarter, but Shaw cut through for two layups and then dished an assist to Omar Cox-Labomme, who drained a 3-pointer in the corner to give Bishop Amat a 47-38 lead with a minute left in the quarter.

“I knew before the game there were going to be some open lanes,” Shaw said. “I knew I had to keep on attacking the basket.”

Roosevelt scored a pair of baskets in the final 30 seconds of the third quarter to cut the deficit to five points. But that would be as close as the Mustangs would get, as Bishop Amat opened up the fourth quarter with an 11-4 run to create some separation.

And it should not come as a surprise that Shaw scored seven points in that decisive run.

Roosevelt’s offense could not find a rhythm in the final period, as the Mustangs went 4 of 15 from the floor with five turnovers.

“I’ve coached games that, even when my team was down, I still had a good feeling,” Dukes said. “That wasn’t the case today. Bishop Amat showed they wanted this one more than us. They won pretty much every 50-50 ball and just never ever let up.”

The Lancers now will look to bring home the program’s first section championship since winning the Division 3AA title in 2002.

“It’s a very exciting moment for this team and our school,” Ertle said. “Anytime you play for a championship is a great thing.”

Cox-Labomme made three 3-pointers in the third period and finished with 13 points. Chris Blakely added 11 for the Lancers.

Haggins scored 15 points for Roosevelt, while Sloane Harris and Cameron Anderson added 10 and 11 points, respectively, for the Mustangs. Roosevelt has qualified for the CIF State playoffs by virtue of reaching the section semifinals.
