TULSA, Okla. >> The Colorado men’s golf team didn’t land where it had hoped at the Big 12 Conference championship, but the Buffaloes finished strong.

In the fourth and final round at Southern Hills Country Club on Thursday, the Buffs posted their best round of the tournament, at 3-over par.

They finished the three-day, four-round event in sixth place, at plus-36.

“An upper division finish in a field with likely 13 teams that will make the NCAA regionals is a really strong event,” CU head coach Roy Edwards said.

CU, which was fourth after the two-round opening day, slipped to sixth Wednesday. Although nine shots better Thursday, the Buffs were unable to move up the standings.

Host Oklahoma State won the title at minus-2 for the week, beating second-place Arizona State by 11 strokes. Texas Tech was a distant third (plus-28) but surged past the Buffs with a minus-6 on Thursday, the best round of the tournament for any team.

Houston (plus-29) and TCU (plus-34) also finished ahead of Colorado. Utah (plus-37) and Kansas State (plus-38) were just behind the Buffs.

CU was led by Justin Biwer, who finished tied for 14th overall, at 7-over par for the tournament. Dylan McDermott tied for 17th, at 8-over par.

Biwer and McDermott both closed with matching even-par 70s on Thursday. It was Biwer’s best round of the week and McDermott’s second-best. McDermott carded three birdies on the back nine to post a 3-under 32.

Hunter Swanson tied for 34th, at plus-12. He posted his best round of the week Thursday, at 1-over par. Ty Holbrook tied for 43rd, at plus-15 for the week, including a 4-over 74 on Thursday.

Brandon Knight, who subbed for Tucker Clark after Tuesday’s opening rounds, posted a 2-over 72 for the second straight day Thursday.

“We had a really good finish to the round today after a rough start,” Edwards said.

“Again, really impressed with the team’s fight and competitiveness. Everyone did this really well, but Dylan especially today. This week was an amazing opportunity to get better and learn about ourselves, and there is no question we took full advantage of that.

“Both Southern Hills and Prairie Dunes test absolutely every part of your game, and we saw what we had all week. The team is in great position heading into the NCAA tournament, and I anticipate a good few weeks of practice ahead.”OSU’s Preston Stout was the individual champ, at 3-under for the tournament. After he posted even-par 70 in each of the first three rounds, he carded a 3-under 67 on Thursday to win his second consecutive conference title.

ASU’s Connor Williams, who was tied for the lead going into Thursday, finished second at plus-1 after an even-par 70 in the final round. ASU’s Michael Mjaaseth and Houston’s Wolfgang Glawe tied for third at even-par.
