FREMONT >> A 5-year-old girl was killed Saturday night while riding in a vehicle on Interstate 880 in one of two possibly related shootings.

Three suspects were later detained and a gun recovered after a high-speed pursuit, authorities said.

The first shooting, shortly after 6:30 p.m., was initially described as being near Fremont Boulevard and Thornton Avenue.

When officers arrived, they learned that a vehicle had pulled alongside a pedestrian on Fremont Boulevard near Norris Road. A person got out of the vehicle, a confrontation occurred, and the person opened fire on the pedestrian, police said. There were no injuries in that shooting.

The pedestrian ran to a nearby neighborhood and the shooter and vehicle fled the scene. In a social media post Sunday, police said the shooting could have been gang-related.

The second shooting, reported around 6:40 p.m., was on southbound Interstate 880 in Fremont. California Highway Patrol spokesmen confirmed, as first reported by partner news organization ABC7, that a 5-year-old girl was shot while in the rear passenger seat of a vehicle. She was pronounced dead at a hospital.

The Alameda County Sheriff’s Office coroner’s division identified the girl Sunday night as Eliyanah Crisostomo and said she was nearly 6 years old. A GoFundMe fund-raising campaign to support her family called her “a fun-loving little girl who loved life” and said that “(a)ll we can do right now is rally together and help the family say goodbye to their little girl. Her parents thank everyone who has reached out and just ask for time as they heal.”

The campaign, which said her family had been heading to a birthday dinner at a Milpitas steakhouse when she was fatally shot, had raised $38,734 toward a $75,000 fund-raising goal as Monday afternoon.

The suspects were detained about three hours after the shootings. Around 9:30 p.m. Saturday, according to a social media post by Santa Cruz police, an officer noticed a vehicle near Ocean and Water streets that was “associated with possibly two shootings that occurred earlier in Fremont,” including a child’s death.

That officer asked for backup before following the vehicle onto Highway 17 and attempting a traffic stop. When the vehicle refused to yield and sped off, officers pursued it. They said a firearm was thrown from the vehicle during the chase.

Soon afterward, the vehicle stopped, and CHP and Scotts Valley police helped take its three occupants into custody. Santa Cruz police turned over all three to Fremont police, and a firearm was recovered near the highway’s Mount Hermon exit.

No criminal charges have been filed yet against the three, a Fremont police spokesperson said Sunday evening.
