


Santa Cruz’s Nat Young tied for fifth place on Sunday at the World Surf League’s Hurley Pro Sunset Beach, event No. 2 on the 2023 Championship Tour season.
Young earned 4,745 points for his finish and has a 6,075 total. He climbed six spots to a tie for 11th on the season rankings.
He was eliminated in the quarterfinals by No. 1 Jack Robinson of Australia 14.76 to 9.33 in 4- to 6-foot waves during their 30-minute heat. Robinson counted waves scores of 7.43 and 7.33, while Young used scores fo 5.33 and 4.00.
No. 2 Filipe Toledo of Brazil defeated No. 6 Griffin Colapinto of Mission Viejo 17.74 to 16.10 for the title.
Event No. 3 on the CT is the MEO Rip Curl Pro Portugal, which has a contest window of March 8-16.
Women’s basketball
At Dominican 74, UC Santa Cruz 69 >> Kaylee Murphy closed the regular season with her 51st career double-double, but the Banana Slugs lost the game against their NCAA Division II opponent in San Rafael on Sunday.
Murphy had 18 points, 10 rebounds and five assists. Amanda Inserra and Ashley Kowack each scored 16 points, and Tess Oakley-Stilson had 12 rebounds to go along with four points.
Freshman guard Keyonee Neal scored 20 points to lead the Penguins (17-10).
UCSC (17-6) plays at the Coast To Coast Championship in Fredericksburg, Virginia, on Thursday through Saturday.
Women’s tennis
UCSC 6, at Pacific University 3 >> Natalie Sprenger, Tanner Rowland, Daniela Christian, and Jolie Seemayer won their singles matches in straight sets for the Banana Slugs in Forest Grove, Oregon, on Sunday.
Meghana Damojipurapu and Rowland, and Seemeyer and Christian won doubles matches for UCSC.
The Banana Slugs (2-2) play at George Fox (2-1) in Newberg, Oregon, on Monday at 2 p.m.
College baseball
Cabrillo 8, at Diablo Valley 7, 11 inn. >> Rees Hall scored three runs, including the game winner in the 11th inning Saturday in nonconference action.
Hall also had two hits and an RBI. Nick Thomson had three hits and scored twice, Dominic Giuffre had a hit and two RBI, Matt Morrison had two hits and a run scored, and Lucas Rexin had hit and two RBI. Kobe Morgan also had two hits.
Richie Kingsborough threw 2.1 innings of relief and earned the win.
Cabrillo (4-6) hosts Los Medaños (6-4) on Tuesday at 2 p.m.
College softball
Cabrillo drops DH >> The Seahawks lost both games of their doubleheader against Siskiyous on Saturday, 4-1 and 4-3.
Catcher Sofia Mendoza had two of Cabrillo’s seven hits in the opener.
In Game 2, Dillyn Vasconcellos and Kasydi Bennett each had two hits and a run scored. Liana Gonzalez had two RBI.
Cabrillo (1-8) plays two games at Fresno City on Tuesday, taking on Folsom Lake (4-7) at noon, and the host Rams (5-2) at 2 p.m.
Men’s volleyball
UCSC at CLU Invite >> The Banana Slugs closed the CLU Invitational in Thousand Oaks with a pair of wins Saturday, beating Benedictine of Illinois 3-1 and sweeping Illinois Institute of Technology 3-0.
Colby Hurdle had 13 kills as UCSC rallied for a 23-25, 25-21, 25-13, 25-20 win. Mohan Duvvuri had 30 assists and seven digs. Max Mednick had 12 digs.
Ethan Makishima had 12 kills in UCSC’s 25-14, 25-19, 25-13 sweep.
UCSC (15-5) plays a pair of matches on March 3 in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, taking on Lancaster Bible (9-3) at 1:30 p.m. and Southern Virginia (6-1) at 4:30 p.m.
