Staring down the end of their season, the Minnesota Frost took control of their own destiny on Saturday.

Britta Curl-Salemme and Sophie Jaques each scored a pair of goals, and Nicole Hensley stopped 29 of 30 shots on goal as Minnesota beat the Boston Fleet 8-1 at Tsongas Center to secure the PWHL’s last playoff spot.

Jaques added an assist for a game-high three points, and her second goal gave the Frost a 7-0 lead 15:09 into the third period. The Fleet needed just one point to earn their second straight playoff berth, but Minnesota took a 3-0 first period lead on goals by Curl-Salemme, Lee Stecklein and Kendall Coyne Schofield and never looked back.

The Frost’s eight goals tied a PWHL single-game record, while the seven-goal differential is the largest margin for victory in PWHL history, surpassing the previous record of five. Minnesota scored four or more goals for the ninth time this season, most in the PWHL.

“We needed a win to keep the season alive,” Coyne Schofield said. “It’s a critical win and we look forward to the next season which is the playoffs.”

Minnesota Frost needed victories in their last two regular-season games — both on the road — to return to the postseason and defend their Walter Cup, won in the PWHL’s inaugural season last year. They won at Ottawa 2-0 on Thursday.

“We’ve had a target on our back all year so for us it doesn’t matter,” head coach Kevin Klee said. “We didn’t earn the right to choose, so we know whoever they select we know we need to go in and play hard and make it hard series.”

The Frost are the fourth seed in the four-team championship tournament. First-place Montreal gets to choose whether it wants to face the Frost or third seed Ottawa in the first round.

Jessica Digirolamo scored to put the Fleet on the board at 15:33, and Minnesota’s Klara Hymlarova found the net with 46 seconds remaining to account for the final score.
