Lowell to host Labor Day weekend festivities

The town of Lowell will host a variety of events to celebrate the Labor Day weekend. Lions Club Cruise Night featuring History on Wheels will run from 5-8 p.m. Saturday on Mill Street. The Kiddie Parade and Family Fun Fest will take place from noon to 3 p.m. Sunday at the Olde Towne Square on Indiana 2 and South Fremont Street. A fireworks show will start at dusk Sunday at the Old Middle School. Parking can be accessed off of Oakley Avenue or at Oak Hill School, 425 S. Nichols Street. Gary mayoral candidate Jerome Prince plans forum

Lake County Assessor Jerome Prince, who is the Democratic nominee for Gary Mayor, will hold a “Can We Talk?” Forum from 6-8 p.m. Friday at St. Timothy Community Church, located at 1600 W. 25th Ave. in Gary.

Hammond to hold Arts on the Ave festival on Saturday

Artists and vendors will gather on Hohman Avenue and Sibley Boulevard for the 3rd Annual Arts on the Ave Outdoor Celebration of the Senses on Saturday.

Artists will create 8-by-8 foot murals using spray paint at EAT Restaurant, 5201 Hohman Ave., starting at noon, said Raymundo Garcia, restaurant owner. The outdoor street arts festival continues through 5 p.m. and celebrates creativity and the rejuvenation of the downtown.

“After the festival, we’ll have a concert ‘Visions of Santana’ inside EAT,” Garcia said.

NWI En Blanc dinner experience slated

Join fellow diners for a night of mystery, intrigue and suspense during the inaugural Northwest Indiana En Blanc Experience Dinner in White from 7-11 p.m. Saturday in a location to be disclosed only hours before the event. Registration will begin at 5 p.m. Guests must dress in all white and provide their own food, tables, chairs, decor and tablecloths all decorated in white. While outside alcohol is not permitted, a cash bar will be available at the venue. Highlights of the evening will include live entertainment and a DJ. Tickets are $50 at Eventbrite.com. Brauer Museum of Art announces 2019–20 season

The 2019–20 season at the Brauer Museum of Art at Valparaiso University will begin with an opening reception featuring a variety of new exhibitions at 7 p.m. Sept. 6 at the museum, 1709 Chapel Drive, Valpariso. Fall exhibitions include “Betty LaDuke: Social Justice Revisited: Remembering • Reliving • Resisting,” “Su Kwak: The Cosmic Light Series” and “Mark Fletcher: Winking Turtle, Whispering Tree.” In addition, the Brauer will host a student coffee hour with Betty LaDuke at a time and date to be announced later, a gallery talk with Su Kwak at 7 p.m. Sept. 25, a music performance of “Landscapes: Music Inspired by the Paintings of Frederic Edwin Church” performed by the Faculty Chamber Music Group at 7 p.m. Oct. 3 and a gallery talk with Mark Fletcher and curator Seojeong Shin at 7 p.m. Nov. 6.

15th Annual Hospice Hustle

Registration is now open for Hospice of the Calumet Area’s annual Hospice Hustle cycling event Sept. 15 at the Lake County Fairgrounds, 889 Court St., Crown Point. Registration will begin at 7 a.m. on race day; the ride will begin at 8 a.m. Participants can choose to ride a 25, 50, 75 or 100 mile course through rural southern Lake County, Indiana. Helmets are required. Registration is $35 in advance and $40 day of event. All proceeds help provide care for hospice patients and their families.
