


The New York Jets are making Sauce Gardner the highest-paid cornerback in the NFL.
The Jets and Gardner agreed on a four-year, $120.4 million extension through the 2030 season.
Gardner, who turns 25 before Week 1, was the No. 4 pick in the 2022 draft out of Cincinnati. He established himself as one of the league’s top cornerbacks during his first two professional seasons, including being selected the AP Defensive Rookie of the Year.
Commanders retiring WR Monk’s jersey >> The Washington Commanders said they are retiring Hall of Fame wide receiver Art Monk’s No. 81 this season.
Monk is the sixth player in franchise history to get that honor, joining Darrell Green, Sammy Baugh, Bobby Mitchell, Sonny Jurgensen and Sean Taylor.
Monk was part of all three of Washington’s Super Bowl teams during the organization’s glory days and is arguably one of the greatest players in franchise history. He played 14 of his 16 NFL seasons with Washington before finishing his career with the New York Jets and Philadelphia Eagles.
Chiefs extend Guard Smith >> The Kansas City Chiefs beat the deadline to sign franchise-tagged guard Trey Smith to a multiyear contract, agreeing to terms Tuesday on a $94 million deal.
Smith, 26, now has the highest average salary of any player at his position in the NFL at $23.5 million annually.
Smith has been a key part of the offensive line protecting two-time MVP quarterback Patrick Mahomes since entering the league in 2021 as a sixth-round draft pick out of Tennessee. Smith has started 67 regular-season and 13 playoff games, helping Kansas City win the Super Bowl twice and getting there last season before losing to Philadelphia.

Former pitcher convicted of Murder >> Retired MLB pitcher Daniel Serafini has been convicted of first-degree murder and attempted murder in the shootings of his wife’s parents during a burglary at their home four years ago near Lake Tahoe in California.
A Placer County jury found the 51-year-old guilty of killing his father-in-law, Gary Spohr, and severely wounding his mother-in-law, Wendy Wood, on June 5, 2021, at their home on the lake’s west shore. Wood received extensive rehabilitation but died a year after the shooting.
Serafini also was convicted of first-degree burglary.
Seattle’s Raleigh wins HR Derby >> Seattle’s Cal Raleigh won his first All-Star Home Run Derby after leading the big leagues in long balls going into the break, defeating Tampa Bay’s Junior Caminero 18-15 in the final round Monday night.
The Mariners’ breakout slugger nicknamed Big Dumper advanced from the first round on a tiebreaker by less than an inch over the Athletics’ Brent Rooker, then won his semifinal 19-13 over Pittsburgh’s Oneil Cruz, whose 513-foot first-round drive over Truist Park’s right-center field seats was the longest of the night.
Hitting second in the final round, the 22-year-old Caminero closed within three dingers, took three pitches and hit a liner to left field.
Becoming the first switch-hitter and first catcher to win the title, Raleigh had reached the All-Star break with a major league-leading 38 home runs.

Blackhawks agree to three-year deal with No. 3 pick >> The Chicago Blackhawks agreed to a three-year, entry-level contract with Anton Frondell, who was the No. 3 overall pick in last month’s draft.
The 18-year-old Swedish forward’s deal has a $975,000 salary cap hit.
Frondell scored 11 goals and had 14 assists last season over 29 regular-season games for Djurgarden, which played in Sweden’s second division. His production was part of the reason the team earned promotion to the top division this year.

Expansion franchise name revealed >> Oregon’s WNBA team stepped back in time for its new name, re-introducing the Portland Fire.
The WNBA expansion franchise, which begins play next next season along with the Toronto Tempo, announced its name and branding — reviving the moniker of the city’s previous WNBA team that played from 2000 to 2002.
“Our feeling is that the fire never died,” interim Fire president Clare Hamill said. “Fans have been waiting for us to come back, and we’re back with the Portland Fire.”
