Former Monte Vista High and Cal tight end Jack Endries is transferring to Texas, according to reports from ESPN’s Pete Thamel and others.

Endries graduated from Monte Vista in 2022 after a stellar prep career that included a first-team All-Bay Area News Group honor for the 2021 season.

Endries wound up walking on at Cal despite holding double-digit scholarship offers and was the Bears’ leading receiver in 2024.

Endries took a visit to Texas’ campus and made his commitment on Friday. He will be a redshirt junior this fall.

In 2023, Endries was a freshman All-American after catching 35 passes for 408 yards. In 2024, he was an all-ACC honorable mention, snagging 56 balls and gaining 623 yards through the air.

Endries will now join coach Steve Sarkisian’s dynamic offense with the Longhorns.

The departure of another offensive standout leaves Cal fans with a wistful sense of what could have been.

The Bears have lost five of their top seven receivers to the transfer portal in addition to Endries.

It hasn’t stopped there. Starting quarterback Fernando Mendoza transferred to Indiana, star running back Jadyn Ott left for Oklahoma and leading rusher Jaivian Thomas, a graduate of McClymonds High in Oakland, entered the portal earlier this week.

Si Woo Kim shot a 64 and was two shots behind, along with Russell Henley (68). Six players were within four shots of the lead, a group that includes defending champion Scottie Scheffler, who didn’t have much go right in his round of 70.

Liu, Buhai share LPGA lead with 63s >> Yan Liu birdied the final three holes in chilly conditions for a 9-under 63 and a share of the first-round lead with Ashleigh Buhai in the LPGA Tour’s JM Eagle LA Championship.

Dahmen sets record in Dominican Republic >> Joel Dahmen played bogey-free for the second straight day for a 6-under 66 to set the 36-hole record at the Corales Puntacana Championship in the Dominican Republic and build a four-shot lead.

Dahmen won the tournament in 2021, and another victory would be a boost since it would give him a two-year exemption with his PGA Tour card.

Michael Thorbjornsen, the Stanford alum who earned a card through the PGA Tour University ranking, matched his career best with a 63 and was four shots back.

NHL sets another attendance record >> The NHL has set another attendance record and surpassed 23 million fans for the first time.

The league reported an attendance figure of 23,014,458 over the 1,312-game regular season. That represents 96.9% capacity over 32 teams with the Montreal Canadiens making up the biggest share thanks to 41 home sellouts with crowds of more than 21,000.

It’s the third consecutive time the 108-year-old NHL has broken attendance records after 22.4 million fans in 2022-23 and 22.9 million last season. That does not include the successful return of international competition: the 4 Nations Face-Off in Montreal and Boston, which drew an average of more than 19,000 fans a game.
