OAKLAND >> FedEx and Goodwill disclosed plans to permanently close multiple Bay Area sites that will impact hundreds of workers in Oakland, Emeryville and San Francisco, according to official WARN notices sent to the state Employment Development Department.
FedEx will cut 95 jobs at a shipping center on Pardee Avenue in Oakland and 79 at a shipping center on 63rd Street in Emeryville, according to WARN filings. FedEx said its layoffs would take effect on June 2.
“Any employees whose positions are eliminated and/or impacted will be provided the options to consider transfer to new locations, severance, or a leave of absence during which they may pursue other positions with FedEx,” FedEx employee law attorney Robbin Hutton stated in the WARN letter to the EDD.
Goodwill will eliminate 72 positions at a site on 30th Avenue in Oakland and 18 jobs at a site on Post Street in San Francisco, WARN notices show. Goodwill scheduled its cuts for June 7.
All of the layoffs were described as permanent and the two organizations said they intended to permanently cease operations at the four facilities. Couriers will mostly be affected by the FedEx closures.
The cutbacks are being revealed to the EDD during a time when the Bay Area employment market is going through a sour stretch. Over the first two months of 2025, the region has lost a net total of 18,200 jobs.
