A legendary television producer known for setting his wildly popular programs in some of the world’s most recognizable locales has turned his attention to Napa Valley.
Darren Star, the creator of “Sex and the City” and “Emily in Paris,” has been tapped by Netflix to write a new wine-centered romantic comedy, “Uncorked,” described by the streaming service as a “perfect pairing of comedy and drama.”
Star will executive produce the series alongside co-showrunner and writer David Schulner (“New Amsterdam”), and Tony Hernandez and Lilly Burns (“Emily in Paris”) of Counterpart Studios, according to a March 18 news release from Netflix.
“We’re thrilled that Darren and David have partnered on this new series, which tells the story of romance and redemption set in the beautiful Napa Valley that we believe will connect with audiences around the world,” said Netflix Vice President Tracey Pakosta.
The sentiment was echoed by the region’s official promotional arm. In a March 20 email to The Press Democrat, Visit Napa Valley said the series has the potential to introduce new audiences to the many layers of the region.
“We’re excited to see Napa Valley featured in a new Netflix series and introduced to audiences around the world in a fresh, creative way,” said Linsey Gallagher, president and CEO of Visit Napa Valley. “Our region offers a unique blend of wine, food, culture, and natural beauty that provides a rich backdrop for storytelling — and we know viewers will be inspired to experience it for themselves.”
“Uncorked” will follow a talented but self-destructive winemaker who returns to Napa “for her second chance at love, legacy and that elusive 100-point wine,” according to Netflix.
For Star and Schulner, the journey so far has included “copious amounts of day drinking in the name of meticulous research.”
“Darren and I wanted to create a series that explores what happens when your greatest passion is also your Achilles’ heel,” Schulner said. “With Napa’s beauty and bounty as our setting, we hope the audience never wants to leave.”
Star’s other titles on Netflix — “Emily In Paris,” “Sex and the City” and its two films, as well as the comedies “Younger” and “Uncoupled” — have generated 435 million views in the last three years. He will continue to oversee “Emily in Paris”, recently renewed for a sixth season after Season 5 spent five weeks on Netflix’s Global Top 10 list.
