It’s been 10 years since downtown San Jose’s SoFA Market opened its doors in the South First Street arts and entertainment corridor with a wide culinary array of locally owned restaurants.

Developed by the late architect Thang Do, the food hall is now run by his wife, Grace Do, who was honored Sept. 13 by community leaders for the decade of success. The general manager is Jennifer Echeverri, owner of Habana Cuba.

The pair decided that the occasion calls for $10 deals, and all of the restaurateurs are taking part. The promotion runs through Sept. 30. To take advantage of the deals, show the link or QR code at www.sofamarketsj.com/10-year-anniversary.

The Fountainhead Bar >> Created for the anniversary, the colorful “Buenos Diez” cocktail combines indigo-hue Butterfly vodka, coconut, ginger, lemon and triple sec.

Oakland’s Temescal gets a new cocktail lounge

Oakland residents in the buzzy Temescal District now have a new place to enjoy cocktails. And then, if they’re hungry, they can step through a side door to grab some tasty Ethiopian/Eritrean food, as the lounge adjoins longtime restaurant Asmara.

51 & Tel, located at 5020 Telegraph Ave., started its life as Asmara’s in-house bar. “My mom and dad own the restaurant and had the bar the whole time, but they’ve never really been into the bar experience,” says Benyam Yohannes. But that changed when 51 & Tel dove headfirst into Temescal’s booming cocktail scene, among hot joints like literary-themed North Light and the martini dive bar Tallboy.

51 & Tel is a full-service bar with an elevated cocktail menu and wine, beer and cider. There are impressive new murals on the walls from Natty Rebel, and a sprawling back patio with plentiful seating, string lights and a huge TV for sports events.

The inaugural cocktail menu has drinks like the White Lightning (mezcal, Pineau des Charentes, Salers Gentian Aperitif) and the Temescal Punch (rum, kiwi, bergamot, citrus, mint, seltzer). There’s a frozen Oakland Oasis with passionfruit and Singani63 — that’d be Steven Soderbergh’s branded spirit — and an espresso martini, because that’s the thing now.

To eat, customers just need to go next door to Asmara to order doro wat or eggplant tibs. (The lounge hopes to introduce a snack menu in the future.)

The goal of 51 & Tel is to be a “neighborhood-friendly spot” where everybody — and their dogs, of course — are welcome. “It’s a little scary in downtown Oakland right now. Everything is dead,” says Yohannes. “Temescal is doing well and is known for great food, but now hopefully we can make it known for great drinks, too.”

‘Star Chefs’ fundraiser coming to Saratoga

The fundraiser with the long title and the long list of noted South Bay chefs is returning to the region on Sept. 29.

“Star Chefs and the Wines & Spirits They Love” will feature gourmet bites paired with cocktails, wines or brews — all to benefit this year’s nonprofit recipient, Momentum for Health, which offers behavioral care for adults in Santa Clara County. The event’s being held this year in Saratoga.

The participating chefs will be Peter Armellino (Plumed Horse), Jeffrey Stout (Orchard City Kitchen, Be.Steak.A), Jackie Jackson (Jackie’s Place), Ross Hanson (Oak & Rye), Ricky Nguyen (The Bywater), Jacob Farleigh (Silos), Marcelo Hernandez (Asa Los Gatos), Jonathan Toste (Flowers), Jose Mendoza (Hero Ranch Kitchen) and Patrick Capurro (Be.Steak.A).

Each chef will prepare an appetizer and present it with a complementary beverage — wine, beer or a specially crafted cocktail.

Beverage partners for the event are Testarossa Winery, Grgich Hills, The Prisoner Wine Co., Brassfield Estate Winery, Joyce Vineyards, Remy Cointreau, No. 3 London Dry Gin, Narrative Fermentations and Sante Adairius Rustic Ales.

Star Chefs will run from 3 to 7 p.m. at a private Saratoga residence. Tickets, $150 each or $250 for a pair at https://momentumforhealth.org/starchefs/.
