The Woodland High School softball team celebrated the end of its season with a heartfelt Senior Day before its final Golden Empire League game of the season against Sutter.
The Wolves (5-19, 2-12 GEL) came into the final game of the year, an enventual 10-1 loss, on a bit of a high note, having just won their second league game of the year in dominant fashion over Natomas by the score of 16-2 back on May 1.
“It’s been an uphill climb this year,” Wolves head coach Jeff Loesch said. “We started out really rough, but seeing the progress the younger players are making is very encouraging. They are working on things every game to make themselves better and the team better.”
Duirng that game, senior Addy Tetreault pitched a five-inning complete game, allowing just a single hit, 2 earned runs and a fantastic 9 strikeouts.
Tetreault also did some damage at the plate, scoring 3 runs and collecting 1 hit. Freshman Bria Arrellano had a banner day at the plate, getting a game high in hits (5) and runs scored (4).
Senior and Eckerd College commit Izzy Loesch had a game-high 5 RBI to go with 3 hits. Sofia Sanchez had 3 hits to go with 2 RBI. Freshman Presley Pinegar had 2 hits, 2 runs scored and 2 RBI. Emma Rubio had 2 hits and 2 RBI, while the freshman pair of Nyah Tempel and Natalie Gutierrez each had 2 runs scored on a hit and an RBI.
“It was a great win,” Loesch recalled. “More for the girls than anything. They have put in a lot of time and work to get a win. It was really uplifting and had us read to go for our final two games against rough teams.”
Before the game, the team honored its six seniors, including Addy Tetreault, Sofia Sanchez, Izzy Loesch, Paige Meneley, Taylin Gill, and Sofia Mendoza.
“They mean everything to me,” Loesch said. “They were the spine of this team. Every single one of them has had a huge part in this program. It was great coaching them. I have coached all of them, aside from one, in their younger years. It’s been great to see them grow since they were six to now graduating from high school.”
Sutter raced out to a 1-0 lead after the second inning, which grew to 8-0 after three and then 9-0 after the top of the fourth. The Wolves managed to get one back in the bottom half of the inning thanks to a Gill RBI single that brought home Bria Arrellano to make it 9-1.
Gill would finish the game with a game-high 3 hits. Tetreault had 2 hits while Arrellano, Gutierrez, Pinegar and Emily Rathjen all had a hit each. Tetreault and Gill handled the pitching on the evening and struck out 3 and 4 batters, respectively.
“I appreciate the help I got this year from Chris Tetreault,” Loesch said. “This season might not have been the season we were looking for, but it was still a great season with a bunch of great girls.”
