A Calumet City, Illinois man is accused of shooting a woman in the face on Thursday in Hammond.
Desmond R. Webb, 35, is charged with attempted murder, a Level 1 felony; aggravated battery when the assault poses a substantial risk of death, a Level 3 felony; and stalking acts committed while the defendant was armed with a deadly weapon, a Level 4 felony.
On Oct. 27, Hammond Police received a call reporting shots had been fired in an alley in the 5600 block of Hohman Avenue, according to the probable cause affidavit, and shortly afterward they received a report of a woman who had been shot in the face. Police arrived at the location and found the woman who had a visible gunshot wound to her face which was bleeding profusely, court records state.
There was a bullet entrance wound below her left eye, and the woman was flown to the University of Chicago Hospital for treatment, records state. The victim told police that she may lose her vision in that eye, the affidavit states.
Police found nine cartridge cases for a 9 mm handgun lying on the ground in the alley, records state. Officers examined surveillance footage from a nearby business which showed a black Chevy Equinox traveling north in the alley and approaching an Audi. Once he was next to the Audi, the footage showed the driver of the Equinox firing a gun at the woman who was standing next to the Audi.
Police later found four bullet holes in the Audi, with two windows shattered, records state. The footage shows the woman then ducked and ran down the alley, putting her hand on her face where the gunshot wound was located.
Witnesses said the victim was being driven to work when Webb, who she previously dated, drove up and opened fire, the affidavit states. Webb had been causing the victim problems at her Hammond residence, and she had filed a restraining order against him.
The victim had previously called police multiple times — between May 31 and Oct. 27 — about Webb violating a protective order by parking in front of her house, theft, burglary and domestic disturbances.
