Reyes Mary “Rae” Tafoya, 92, passed away on June 5th in Westminster, Colorado. Rae was born in Delcarbon, Colorado to Alfonso Cabral and Ophelia Tolmich on June 21st, 1931. She went to high school at Huerfano County High School in Walsenburg, Colorado and graduated in 1949. She went on to serve her country and enlisted in the Army in 1950. Rae spent a year and half in Fort Lee, Virginia, and then was transferred to Salzburg, Austria, where she served diligently in Officer Personnel and Payroll. After three and half years with service she was discharged as a Sergeant with Honors. From there, Rae worked her way up the ranks at Metropolitan Life Insurance Company starting as a clerk and then ultimately as an Office Supervisor for 18 years. Rae then found her way to the aviation and hospitality industry and worked at Boeing, Frontier, Continental Airlines and in the local Denver restaurant industry. Her vast experience and work ethic led her to successfully launch her own business in 1987 and serve as her Company’s Secretary and Treasurer for 35+ years and into her final days. Rae enjoyed running, travel, golf, bowling, dancing, local sporting events, and had a passion for bringing together family and friends for a variety of social events and gatherings. Rae lived a life full of generosity and received numerous awards and recognitions from local charities.
Rae is survived by her son, Rod Tafoya; siblings Cordellia Mesta, Charlene (Carla) Norman, Margaret Gallegos, and Alfonso (Sonny) Cabral; and several nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her spouse, John Tafoya; parents Alfonso Cabral, Ophelia Tolmich Ramirez, and Prospero Ramirez; siblings Arthur Cabral, Martin Cabral, Marie Nieto, and Ophelia Sanchez.
Funeral service will be held at Annunciation Catholic Church, 1408 E 36th Ave Denver, CO 80205 on Thursday, June 20th at 11am.
Burial will follow at St. Anthony Mausoleum at Mt. Olivet, 12801 W 44th Ave, Wheat Ridge, CO 80033. A reception will be held at Que Bueno Suerte 1518 S Pearl Street, Denver, CO 80210 following the burial.
Visitation will be held at Mt. Olivet Catholic Cemetery on Wednesday, June 19 at 4:30pm, Rosary to follow at 6:30pm.
