Charles Winslow Ballance departed peacefully to be with the Lord on May 10, 2022, in Arcadia, CA. Born in East Milton, MA on July 3, 1923, to Eva Imogene (Kidder) and Thaxton Argyle Ballance, Win had three sisters and two brothers. The family moved to California in 1924, living first in San Marino, then Altadena, and finally settling in Pasadena. Win enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve in September, 1940, at the age of 17 years, and was called to active duty at Camp Elliott, San Diego in November, 1940, where he trained as a radio operator. Assigned to the 8th Marines, Win boarded the USNT Monterey for overseas duty on January 6,1942, and participated in landings at Guadalcanal, Tarawa, Saipan, and Tinian. Honorably discharged at the rank of Staff Sergeant on October 9, 1945, Win married Mabel Irene Milligan (Millie) on October 27, 1945, and together they celebrated 71 years of devoted and adoring marriage. Win was the proud father of John Winslow Ballance and Linda Ballance Foss; beloved grandfather to Dennis Winslow Ballance, Stephanie Ballance Baltz, Jennifer Foss Rice, and Suzanne Foss Chaffey, and great grandfather to Natalie and Elise Ballance, Garrett and Emily Baltz, and Ethan, Gideon and Adelyn Rice. He was also Uncle Win to numerous nieces and nephews and their families.
Win worked at his father’s meat market in Pasadena as a meat cutter for about 8 years, then as a butcher for Market Basket for an additional 8 years. He then took a position as a salesman for Oscar Meyer for about 5years. In his off hours, he built two single family homes in Arcadia, completed his GED, and earned his General Contractor’s License in 1962. He and his younger brother, who was an architect, formed Ballance Brothers, Incorporated, and built several apartment buildings locally, as well as a conference center in Twin Peaks. Following the dissolution of BBI, Win focused his company, Win Ballance Incorporated, on residential and commercial remodeling work, retiring in 1988.
Win loved to play games, especially Bridge, Cribbage, and Joker, with family and friends, and hosting parties with Millie at their home in Arcadia. Win loved camping, snow skiing, waterskiing, hiking, sightseeing, and his family. He was a member of the Do Si Do square dance club, the Co-Weds Fellowship Group, as well as a dedicated volunteer and active member of the Church of the Good Shepherd, Arcadia.
Together, Win and Millie traveled the U.S., Canada, and various countries overseas, many of these trips with friends from church.
