A fan who heckled Arizona Diamondbacks second baseman Ketel Marte during a game against the Chicago White Sox at Rate Field late Tuesday night has been banned indefinitely from all major league stadiums, a person with direct knowledge of the decision told The Associated Press.

Marte was seen in tears on the field after the spectator yelled a derogatory comment about Marte’s late mother during a seventh-inning at-bat in Arizona’s 4-1 win over Chicago.

According to a White Sox spokesperson, the security staff at the ballpark relayed that the 22-year-old fan was “very apologetic and remorseful after the fact, and admitted to being very inappropriate and stupid with his comments.” Another person confirmed to the AP that Major League Baseball had banned the fan from all big league stadiums. That person spoke on condition of anonymity because the punishment wasn’t announced by the league.

Marlins Meyer to have season ending surgery >> Marlins right-hander Max Meyer will undergo season-ending labral repair surgery on his left hip on Friday, the club told reporters.

Meyer had gone on the 15-day injured list on June 3 with a left hip impingement a day after a rough outing in which he allowed five runs (four earned) on 10 hits with five strikeouts and a walk against Colorado.

Meyer went 3-5 in 12 starts this season, posting a 4.73 ERA with 68 strikeouts.

Hockey

Oilers trade Evander Kane to Canucks >> Evander Kane is going home to play for the Vancouver Canucks after a trade from the Edmonton Oilers that helps the two-time defending Western Conference champions free up some much-needed salary cap space.

Vancouver acquired Kane for the 117th pick in the upcoming NHL draft, taking on his entire $4 million salary. Edmonton clears $5.125 million off the cap, with Leon Draisaitl’s new contract taking effect and Evan Bouchard set for a raise of his own.

Kane returned early in the playoffs after missing the entire regular season following multiple surgeries to repair a series of injuries and had six goals and six assists on Edmonton’s second consecutive run to the Stanley Cup Final.

Poulin wins PWHL’s Billie Jean King MVP award >> Montreal Victoire captain Marie-Philip Poulin has won the Professional Women’s Hockey League’s Billie Jean King MVP Award for the 2024-25 season.

Poulin, who was also named forward of the year, was presented the awards at a ceremony in Ottawa.

The 34-year-old Poulin led the league with 19 goals and finished fourth with 26 points in 30 games.

NASCAR

Judge orders teams to turnover financial data >> A federal judge ordered a dozen NASCAR teams to provide 11 years of financial data to the stock car series as part of an ongoing legal fight but sharply limited what they need to share.

A day after hearing arguments from both sides, U.S. District Judge Kenneth Bell of the Western District of North Carolina said the information will “allow NASCAR to have much of the arguably relevant substance of the requested information, while protecting the legitimate interests” of the 12 teams.

Under the decision, the teams must provide top-line data — total revenue, total costs, and net profits and losses — dating to 2014.

WNBA

Fever waive Bonner >> The Indiana Fever waived DeWanna Bonner, giving the 16-year veteran her unconditional release.

Bonner had been away from the team since June 12, missing five games for personal reasons. She averaged 7.1 points and 3.8 rebounds a game for the Fever since coming to the franchise as a free agent in February.

Bonner averaged double-figures scoring in each of her seasons in the WNBA and has been a full-time starter since 2012 when she played in Phoenix and Connecticut. She only started in three of the nine Indiana games she played in. She moved into third place on league’s all-time scoring list in season opener.
