SEATTLE >> Robbie Ray was tagged for home runs by Shea Langeliers, Cristian Pache and Nick Allen, and the Seattle Mariners’ hopes of hosting the AL wild-card series took a serious blow with a 10-3 loss to the Oakland Athletics on Sunday.

The hangover from the excitement of Seattle clinching its first postseason berth in 21 years two days earlier seemed to finally hit the Mariners on Sunday. Oakland starter James Kaprielian no-hit the Mariners for 5 2/3 innings before giving up a two-out single to Ty France in the sixth inning. Kaprielian (5-9) struck out seven, and beat Seattle for the third time this season.

Langeliers added a second homer in the ninth inning, a three-run shot.

la russa to retire >> Tony La Russa returned to the Chicago White Sox after the 2020 season looking to take a young and promising team to the next step.

Instead, the second season of his second stint will end with the Sox missing the playoffs and, reportedly, a managerial change.

La Russa plans to announce his retirement Monday, USA Today’s Bob Nightengale reported Sunday.

La Russa’s hiring on Oct. 29, 2020, shocked the baseball world because he had not managed since leading the St. Louis Cardinals to the 2011 World Series title.

Oregon routs stanford >> When Stanford’s 45-27 loss at 13th-ranked Oregon ended at 12:06 a.m. Sunday, it marked exactly one year since the Cardinal had defeated an FBS opponent.

Stanford (1-3, 0-2 Pac-12) beat Colgate in its season opener but has lost 10 straight against FBS competition since defeating Oregon on Oct. 2, 2021 — the longest streak in the country. Even worse, the last seven losses all have been by 13 points or more.

Cal gets blown out >> One week after scoring 49 points in a win over Arizona, Cal managed just one touchdown against nine punts in a 28-9 loss to Washington State on Saturday at Gesa Field in Pullman, Washington.

And things could be tougher still if quarterback Jack Plummer is seriously injured. The senior transfer from Purdue, who had played every snap all season, left the field with just 5 minutes left apparently injuring his right knee.

Plummer remained in the game to begin the next drive but was back on the sideline with 3 minutes left, giving way to redshirt freshman Kai Millner in his first collegiate appearance.

Alabama retakes No. 1 >> Alabama reclaimed No. 1 from Georgia in The Associated Press college football poll in one of the closest votes in recent years, and six teams — including Kansas — made their season debut.

The Crimson Tide received 25 first-place votes and 1,523 points in the AP Top 25 presented by Regions Bank, two points more than the Bulldogs. Georgia received 28 first-place votes to become the first team since Alabama in November 2019 to have the most first-place votes but not be No. 1.

The Tide was No. 2 behind LSU that year, with 21 first-place votes to the Tigers’ 17.

Hull wins in Texas >> Charley Hull put a little extra time into putting practice and it paid off for her in a big way when she ran off four birdies on the back nine for a 7-under 64 to win The Ascendant LPGA.

Hull won for the first time on the LPGA Tour in nearly six years, and the 26-year-old from England crossed the $1 million mark in season earnings.

She loved the theater of the final hour at Old American Golf Club as much as soaking herself with champagne when she held on for a one-shot victory.

Fox wins Dunhill Links >> Ryan Fox paid tribute to his former amateur teammate Shane Warne after claiming a one-shot victory at the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship.

New Zealand’s Fox had finished second in last year’s team event in Scotland alongside former Australia cricket great Warne, who died earlier this year.
