Currently, the boys soccer program at Boulder High School is ranked as the top team in the state by both MaxPreps and the Colorado High School Activities Association.

On Thursday, the Panthers (5-0 coming into the week) will get their biggest test of the season to date when they travel to CHSAA Class 5A No. 2 Broomfield (6-0), which won its state-best ninth program title a year ago.

Elsewhere in boys soccer, Holy Family (CHSAA 3A No. 1) and Longmont (4A No. 4) are ranked in MaxPreps’ top 10 teams in Colorado at No. 5 and 10.

In CHSAA’s Selection and Seeding Index — which determines the postseason field for all classifications — Centaurus (No. 2), Silver Creek (No. 7) and Niwot (No. 8) are ranked in 4A’s top 10. Jefferson Academy (No. 9) and Prospect Ridge Academy (No. 10) are in 3A’s top 10. Legacy is 5A’s 10th-ranked team and Dawson is 2A No. 9.

Each week through the regular season, BoCoPreps will highlight five games or events to keep an eye on. During the week of Sept. 16, we’ll take a look at football, soccer, softball and volleyball.

Erie at Mead softball, Thursday, 4 p.m.

Erie (9-6 coming into the week), last year’s 5A runner-up, has bounced back from a 2-6 start with seven straight wins. Last week, it beat Legacy, Bennett, Brush and Greeley West by a combined 61-1. That’s not a typo.

Mead (7-7), meanwhile, bounced back from a 15-0 loss to undefeated 5A No. 1 Broomfield with a 15-0 win of its own against Silver Creek last Thursday. Halie Gippe has a team-leading 21 RBIs and three home runs this fall.

Boulder at Broomfield soccer, Thursday, 6:30 p.m.

A state title game preview? Who knows — but this lines up to be one of the most anticipated boys soccer games of the regular season.

The Panthers handed 4A No. 2 Centaurus and 5A No. 7 Cherry Creek their first losses of the season last week as star forward Xander Sevian combined for four goals.

Coming into the week, the Eagles had won 13 straight dating back to last season’s 5A championship run. Joziah Garron Guillen had five goals and was one of nine players who have at least one goal for the Eagles this fall.

Skyline at Frederick volleyball, Thursday, 6:30 p.m.

Coming into the week, the Falcons had four wins in six matches — matching their entire win total from the past two seasons. Junior Mikaela Stromquist has 36 aces, sixth-best in the state. Twelve of them came in a sweep against Wheat Ridge last week.

Frederick came in 7-3 and on a six-match winning streak. Ava Reed had 97 kills in 30 sets played, a year after she had 100 across 78 sets.

Fairview at Monarch football, Friday, at 7 p.m.

The Knights’ red-hot offensive start is nothing new under coach Tom McCartney. But the way they’re doing it — on the ground — is something different.

The air-raid offensive attack that has been the personality of Fairview (3-0) for years has been replaced by a stout rushing attack, which has racked up 822 yards and 13 scores through three games.

Monarch, meanwhile, improved to 3-1 under new coach Jeff Santee after last week’s 35-19 win over Centaurus.

Bear Creek at Silver Creek football, Friday, 7 p.m.

What to make of Silver Creek’s 2-1 start —

The Raptors opened the season with a convincing 39-6 win over Skyline, giving Jeremy Mercer a win in his Silver Creek coaching debut. Then, they beat Longmont 28-20 behind David Tan’s three rushing TDs last week.

Between it, though, they lost 28-14 to Boulder, which fell to Fairview 56-0 in Week 3.

Silver Creek, which gets Bear Creek (3-0) in Week 4, is searching for its first winning season 2016 when it went 12-1 and reached the 3A semifinals.
