Guardians: Pitcher Luis Ortiz will remain on non-disciplinary leave through Aug. 31 while he is the subject of a Major League Baseball gambling investigation. Ortiz’s paid leave began on July 3 and was supposed to end on Friday before MLB and the MLB Players Association agreed to extend it. The team can continue to have contact with Ortiz, but he can’t enter any of the Guardians’ facilities. The Guardians said in a statement they have been informed of the extension and will continue to fully cooperate with the investigation. The investigation is related to in-game prop bets on two pitches thrown by Ortiz that received higher activity than usual during his starts at Seattle on June 15 and his recent outing against St. Louis on June 27. The gambling activity on the pitches was flagged by a betting-integrity firm and forwarded to MLB. Ortiz, 26, is in his first season with Cleveland after he was acquired in a trade with Pittsburgh last December. The right-hander is 4-9 with a 4.36 ERA and 96 strikeouts in 16 starts this season. In four big-league seasons, Ortiz is 16-22 with a 4.05 ERA and one save. The investigation into Ortiz comes a little more than a year after MLB suspended five players for gambling, including a lifetime ban for Padres INF Tucupita Marcano.

Rangers: Veteran 1B Rowdy Tellez took part in a workout with the Texas Rangers on Thursday, with the anticipation that he will be added to their roster before the first game after the All-Star break. Tellez signed a minor league deal with the Rangers on July 5, a week after being released by Seattle. He had been designated for assignment after he hit .208 with 11 home runs and 27 RBIs in 62 games with the Mariners. The Rangers (48-49) open a three-game series at home Friday night against Detroit (59-38), which has the best record in the majors despite a four-game losing streak. Texas has an open spot on its 26-man active roster, and also an open spot on its 40-man roster. 1B Jake Burger (left quad strain) was put on the 10-day injured list for the second time this season on Wednesday. That move was retroactive to Sunday, after he had played only 10 games since missing 10 games during his previous IL stint from June 21 until July 2 because of a left oblique strain.

Trade: The Rangers acquired RHP José Ruiz and cash considerations from the Braves for RHP Dane Dunning. Ruiz, 30, has split the season between Philadelphia and Atlanta and both teams’ Triple-A affiliates. He will report to Triple-A Round Rock. Ruiz made 16 relief appearances for Philadelphia before being designated for assignment June 1 and claimed off waivers by the Braves on June 7. He pitched in two games for Atlanta, and is 1-0 with an 8.82 ERA and 15 strikeouts in 16 1/3 innings in the 18 combined games. Dunning, 30, had a 3.38 ERA in 10 2/3 innings without a decision in five games this season for Texas.

Giants: Former managing general partner Bill Neukom, a bow-tie loving, longtime Microsoft attorney who was at the helm when the team won its first World Series title in 2010, has died. He was 83. The team announced Neukom’s death Thursday. No additional information was provided. Neukom retired from his role following the 2011 season and after the Giants captured the 2010 World Series for their first of three every-other-year titles that included championships in 2012 and 2014. The 2010 victory marked the first for the team since moving West in 1958.
